1. KNOW WHAT YOUWANT TO ACCOMPLISH

It is important to clearly identify your planning session goals and objectives.

What are the specific takeways? What must be done and accomplished?

Employ team building strategies.

Keep your objectives down to a few and then accomplishthem one-by-one to keep your team motivated and focused.

5. DESIGN YOUR SESSIONAPPROPRIATELYWhere many strategic planning sessions fail is inthe specific design of the session. Ground rules andeffective meeting practices should be established andcommunicated upfront. Plan at least two full days for the firstmeeting at an offsite location to minimize distractions. Utilizeteam building strategies to keep your team moving forward.

If designing strategic sessions is not your fortebring in a professional – this type of meeting is tooimportant to practice on.

7. GET TO DECISIONS

Have you ever been in a meeting where there isdebate around an issue that we have alreadyagreed upon – but no one seems to know it? In these situations you need a strongfacilitator/leader who can call out foror make a decision.

8. SET REALISTIC NEXTSTEPSIn today’s resultsfocused, instant gratification society thatwe live in, the expectation can be that when yourstrategic planning session is over you will have completedan action plan to implement. In reality, most groups rushat the end of their sessions and make a poor attempt todocument a list of action steps. It is more importantto use your time wisely and summarize what wasdiscussed and decided upon. The best next step is toschedule another meeting.

9. CREATE A CHANGEMANAGEMENT TEAM AND HOLDA FOLLOW UP MEETING

Instead of letting that strategic plansit in a desk drawer, we suggest that youimmediately form a change management team andhold a followup meeting to review the first draftof your strategic plan.
