The economy of this country got liberated in 1992, with this liberalized economy came

many multinationals to market their product to Indian consumers. This liberalization

touched the industrial product users as well.

Tooling industry is one of such industry. Tools are major & important part of the

production. From long time tools have got immense important in any manufacturing

industry.

TCT, Taiwan is one of such company, which manufactures tools used for PCB (printed

circuit board) industry. T.C.T. Group is the first Taiwanese-capital company invested into

the P.C.B. cutting tool in Taiwan. T.C.T group has large number of customer segment in

all over the world but they failed to have impact on Indian market, which is very lucrative

in today’s scenario.

Hence the company is been constantly seeking to enter into the Indian market. ULTRA

PRECISION SPINDLES PVT LTD. (U.P.S.P.L) is one of the way TCT group has found

to achieve the same. T.C.T group approached U.P.S.P.L to take the agency of their

P.C.B.tools to capture the Indian market.

At this point U.P.S.P.L felt the need of such kind of marketing project, which can give

complete & true idea about taking T.C.T tool agency.

4

Page 5: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

As U.P.S.P.L is already working in reconditioning of P.C.B spindles, the company found

the task little easy to complete. Hence the task is been forwarded to training department

instead of going to fulltime marketing task. This is first phase of the project.

Second phase of this project contains market survey about reconditioning of spindles.

This phase is particularly important to the company to enhance their reconditioning

activity.

The major portion of this project is collection of data, which is mainly done with the help

of questionnaire. This project also includes analyzing collected data, presenting it into

tabular form and suggestions to company if any.

The project is related to know the annual consumption, most popular sizes of drill bits &

router bits which are used in P.C.B industry for drilling and routing purpose respectively.

It is also related to know delight level of customers on their present supplier. The project

also includes knowing the present popularity of T.C.T group in Indian market. Lastly the

attempt is made to know the expectations from various companies from U.P.S.P.L, if

company takes the agency.

Second phase is related to know number of various types of machines with their

manufacturing makes. It is also related to the points like delight level of customers and

their expectations about reconditioning of spindles.

REASON FOR CHOOSING COMPANY & PROJECT

UPSPL is a mechanical company. As I was thinking of doing project in industrial

marketing, there was a lot of scope to do the different task of industrial marketing.

Though the company is relatively small, it was giving a due attention towards enhancing

marketing activities. This is the main reason of choosing this particular company.

The project is a challenging task particularly at trainee level. There were different

challenges involved at different stages in the project. Maximum responsibility was given

to carryout this project. Also there was scope to use maximum theoretical (marketing)

knowledge. Hence I have chosen this particular project.

Duration

The duration of the project was of 2 months starting from 1 June to 31 July.

HOW THE PROJECT IS CARRIED OUT?

The project was carried out by making questionnaire and personally visiting PCB

companies in different part of the country to fill up the same. Some part of the project

6

Page 7: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

also includes visit of hard-core companies in pune region for the survey of reconditioning

of spindles. The project also involved analysis of collected data.

When field studies are undertaken in practical life, consideration of time & cost

almost invariably lead to a selection of respondents. The respondents selected are the

representatives of the total population. The selected respondents constitute what is

technically called a “sample”. The survey is “sample survey”.

SAMPLING PLAN

Page 42: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

a) SAMPLING UNIT- It indicates the people or subject that is selected for

particular research. The purchase managers/executives of leading companies

in Pune, Ahmednagar, Bangalore, Gandhinagar were selected

b) SAMPLE SIZE- It indicates the number of respondent that are selected for

particular research. A sample size is of 12 companies from Maharashtra &

southern region

c) SAMPLING PROCEDURE- Sampling procedure indicates the manner in

which particular respondents were selected.

As the P.C.B market is relatively strong in India it is somewhat mandatory for

me to select all possible P.C.B companies in Maharashtra & southern region. I

have also selected hard-core companies for second phase survey. But broadly

speaking I have selected the companies on the basis of their annual turnover.

d) GEOGRAPHICAL UNIT- Area which is covered in the project was

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Tamilnadu.

6. COLLECTION OF DATA

Page 43: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

This stage of any research consists of collection of required data from the sample

decided upon.

There are two types of data collection

1) Primary data

2) Secondary data

1) Primary data: Primary data is collected from various P.C.B companies.

The exclusive survey is done to get the primary data. With prior appointment of

purchase managers, the interviews were fixed. This is more live and reliable data than

secondary data.

2) Secondary data: The information related to the industry is collected from

company brochure, technical manual, periodicals, newspapers, internet and different

magazines. This is less reliable data than primary data.

7. ANALYSIS OF DATA

After the data is collected, the next step is to analyze it. This task contains the use of

analytical skills, interdependence of the various attributes involved & their impact on the

research.

8. INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Page 44: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

The real value of research lies in its ability to draw conclusion. Information based on

real facts & the systematic collected data was made available in this stage. This is the

final stage of research.

6. RESEARCH DESIGN

Page 45: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

Research design is the overall description of all the steps through which the project

has proceeded from the setting of the objectives to the writing of the project work.

Below are the various steps in brief of the research design for this project.

PILOT SURVEY

Pilot survey was designed in Pune region to give an overview of the research and to

check whether industrial technocrats are responding that we needed. It might be

possible that, some companies are not wiling to cooperate & disclose their

confidential information. So accordingly it was necessary to modify the

questionnaire. Pilot survey is also necessary to receive some valuable suggestions

from experienced and key persons from the industry.

It played an important role as the persons interviewed from pune industry were

handling key positions in the company. Hence it gives some valuable suggestions to

modify the questionnaire there by giving a good start to the project.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

Page 46: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

An ideal research instrument must ensure reliability of collected data. A well-

designed instrument was the main research instrument used in this particular project.

While some of the questions were open ended, some were close ended too.

INTERVIEW PLANNING

Interviews were planned as per the planned schedule. It was expected to finish of the

sample size within stipulated time. Most of the time it was depended upon getting

appointment of the purchase managers. Firstly interviews from pune region were

planed and then outside Maharashtra interviews were covered.

PROCESSING, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

In this stage all the collected data were checked for any inconsistencies. This step

proves quite useful to remove or cross check any incorrect data which otherwise may

prove factual during analysis.

From analysis, the interpretation was possible and the various problems, which were

required to be explained, can be elucidated.

Finally the report containing all details was designed.

7. SUMMER TRAINING SCHEDULE

Page 47: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

The project has to be completed in a period of 8 weeks. Before actual commencement of the project, time schedule was prepared. It is as follows.

9. SUGGETIONS & CONCLUSION

SUGGETIONS (PHASE-1)

As a management student, I would like to suggest some issues to the management of

Ultra Precision Spindles Pvt Ltd, which are as follows.

Ind-sphinx is leader in Indian market having its own plant in India. I found high

delight level with customers in terms of their pricing, delivery & technical

support.

So management of U.P.S.P.L should give a due consideration to Ind-sphinx as a

major competitor in Indian market.

Pricing policies plays an important role in Indian market. Hence U.P.S.P.L &

T.C.T group should decide pricing policies to enter in Indian market.

U.P.S.P.L & T.C.T group will have to decide upon stocking programme of the

items, as delivery of items would play major role in success of selling the items.

Page 69: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

U.P.S.P.L should take technical support from T.C.T group in terms of speed/feed

selection of spindle speed & different quality related issues of tolerances of hole

sizes and quality of holes/routing.

CONCLUSION (PHASE-1)

If U.P.S.P.L start working this FY, the expected market share would be 5

to 7% in FY 2008-09. i.e. US $ 1,25,000

The offer is feasible, if TCT group gives a due consideration to the following

points

U.P.S.P.L need to finalize on channel of operation in terms of

technical support by way of training its personnel and joint

marketing as TCT/U.P.S.P.L in Indian market.

Visit of technical experts from TCT is very necessary to address

different technical queries by customers till the time U.P.S.P.L

engineers have sufficient knowledge to handle these queries

independently.

U.P.S.P.L need exclusiveness for selling these products in Indian

market.

U.P.S.P.L need to work on best pricing with accepted credit

policies to enter Indian market as this is purely trading business

and would take time to realize investment in sales revenues.

Page 70: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

SUGGETIONS (PHASE-2)

Suggestions for reconditioning facility are parallel to the customer expectations. I would

suggest to the management of U.P.S.P.L to fulfill maximum customer expectations,

which are as follows.

Lead time should be as minimum as possible

Root cause of breakdown should be given by UPSPL and remedies should be

given to avoid the same

Facilities such as tool clamping force checking, bearing preload, noise &

vibration checking and temperature checking should be available in the tool room.

Facility of 300mm mandrel run out check should be available in the tool room.

10 to 15 hrs of running of spindle must be done before dispatching it to the

customer.

Page 71: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

Home service should be given for some specific kind of spindles.

Difference between before reconditioning readings and after reconditioning

readings should be provided to the customers.

Proper handling of spindles should be there at the time of dispatch.

UPSPL should provide means to increase the life of spindles.

In house servicing should be provided after 1 week of reconditioning of spindle.

A-51 & A-55 spare spindles should be provided by UPSPL while reconditioning

of the same.

Page 72: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

CONCLUSION (PHASE-2)

U.P.S.P.L should concentrate more on reconditioning of machining center

spindles, whose population is on rise. Moreover, in comparison with grinding

spindles, which is primary focus of U.P.S.P.L, machining center spindles are used

more. Hence there has to be focus shift in U.P.S.P.L management working

policies to cater more on machining center spindles.U.PS.P.L has to create

appropriate infra structure to cater machining center spindle reconditioning.

This paradigm shift will also fetch better sales revenue to U.PS.P.L as the average

reconditioning cost of grinding spindles is Rs 25,000 as against machine center

spindle reconditioning average cost is Rs 60,000.

There are more avenues for U.P.S.P.L to support auxiliary services like total

AMC, on site taper grinding, vibration analysis etc.

Page 73: 0601043 feasibility study for diversification & market survey

10. LIMITATIONS

Due to constraints, the study is limited towards only in Maharashtra, Karnataka,

Tamilnadu and Gujarat. It fails to capture north region.

Survey is conducted only in industries; hence it is an industrial survey.

Reconditioning of spindles survey is carried out in pune region only.
