Compare Mahindra Thar Vs Nissan Terrano While these are, strictly, not similar type of vehicles, this jeep from Mahindra and the SUV from Nissan may come up for a closer scrutiny by those planning to purchase an off roader. Comparing the Mahindra Thar vs the Nissan Terrano is, therefore, not a head to head fight of two equals but more a weighing up of a broader type of vehicle category. The Terrano is a much bigger vehicle and the specifications bear that out. At 4331 mm length, 1822 mm width, it outscores the Thar that is 3920 mm long and 1710 mm wide. But the Mahindra is taller at 1930 mm against the 1671 mm of the Nissan. Ground clearance is near identical at about 200-205 mm. The Mahindra Thar is more a jeep than an SUV and is available in a 2.5 litre CRDe engine that produces 105 BHP. The four cylinder diesel engine is turbocharged and generates 247 Nm of power at 3800 rpm. The Nissan Terrano’s best selling variant is the 1.5 litre diesel engine that belts out 110 BHP at 248 Nm of torque at 3900 rpm. The CRDi mill has four valves and is also turbocharged. While the Terrano is a FWD with a 6 speed gearbox, the Thar is a AWD with a 5 speed unit. Both, though, do not have an automatic variant as of now. McPherson Strut and Torsion beam axle make up the front and back of the Nissan while there is a semi elliptical leaf designed set up with the Mahindra. Both have disc and drum braking front and back while the steering column on the Thar is a rack and pinion as against the tilt steering in the Terrano’s column. Both are, as far as eco readiness is concerned, BS IV compliant with the Terrano having a fair edge in its fuel efficiency. It delivers 16 kmpl in the city and 19 km pl

on the highway while the Thar is a much lower 13.25 and 17 for identical driving conditions. Both have 16 inch wheel dimensions but the Thar has a 235/70 R16 while the Terrano has a 215/65 R16 as far as the tyre size goes. Given the jeep like and open roofed set up, the Thar can seat seven adults while the Terrano is strictly a five seater. But then, that is also the Mahindra’s weakness. There are no regular features seen usually in closed vehicles. Voice driven functions, power windows, navigation and in-car entertainment systems, among others are missing here. The Terrano, on the other hand, is expected to provide many standard features. While not in the league of a Ford EcoSport, it still does much better than the Mahindra offering.
