California's Yosemite National Park was established on October 1, 1890.

More than a century ago, naturalist John Muir, a strong advocate for the recognition and protection of the region, successfully lobbied congress to set aside more than 700,000 acres as one of the nation's first national parks.

Up to 4 million visitors per year make the trip to Yosemite.
