The Metropolitan Opera

•Founded in 1880 by wealthy subscribers who were shunned by Academy of Music• Performs September through May. •Roughly 28 operas are performed each year with 7 of them being new the rest are rep.•The total number of performances was 209 performances of 28 operas in 12-13•The Met Opera moved to its Lincoln Center Location in 1966. •Seating Capacity is 3800 (Gershwin is 1,933) roughly 800,000 per season• James Levine is the Current Maestro/ Musical Director•The venue has individual screens for each seat which show the translation text•2011/12 budget was 325 million •The Metropolitan Opera broadcasts many performances Live in HD

•The Met performs Operas ranging from Baroque to Minimalism, utilizing traditional and new approaches to its productions.

•The Met did not originate as a producing organization. Originally it hired in performances for the season.

•There have been several deaths at the Met over the years. A doctor is on staff for every performance.

•The Proscenium is 54’ wide and 54’ high.

•Distance from curtain line to back wall is 80’

•Height from the stage to rigging loft is 110’
