Scene 3: Act 2
The environment sets the stage for a production
This wild comedy that takes after the suppliant takes place in modern day Italy.
The play starts with the arrival of 8/50 Greek sisters by yacht to Piero’s villa.
The majority of the play takes place in Piero’s villa.
The Environment
Since the play is mostly inside of a villa, it is mainly set in an enclosed area to show the unrest and uneasiness inside a home, which is suppose to be a place of peace.
Style and Mood
The play takes place inside a huge villa in modern day Italy.
A realistic setting is used to allow the audience to see a setting that is very much in like with its counterpart in real life.
The background should also change in response to the change of scenery to the wedding scene.
Time Period and Background
Together with the director, costume designs, and lighting of the play, the set can tie in with these three to help make a more effective, and enjoyable play.
Overlapping Set With the Rest of the Elements of the Play
The play is set in a palatial house. In a room a spacious room with terrace facing wonderful views, the lighting is set by natural daylight, that sets the atmosphere to begin the play.
However the beauty of the nature is overshadowed by the atmosphere changing dialogue used by each character.
Light Design
Characters with influence on lighting
Thyona and Constantine: Both in their
dialogue show hatred, anger and passion. This changes the mood to all the characters. When they speak the lighting changes to more passionate colors of deep reds and dark oranges.
The play opens with a Spotlight on Lydia as she walks on stage and enters the tub. The duration of this scene takes place inside the bathroom. The lights will be bright and airy in an attempt to cast a tranquil setting
Scene 1
This is scene is right outside of the Villa in the garden and inside the guest quarters. The Lights for this will fluctuate between bright to dim to emphasize the change in locations.
Scene 2
This scene will many changes. For the wedding an elegant grace of whites and yellows will prepare
the setting. At the reception, the lighting will brilliant colors, showing the
playfulness party atmosphere Then it drastically change to deep colors of terror when the women
begin to fulfill their pacts.
Scene 3
The receptions
At the end of the play the lighting around the cast will dim and a spotlight will surface as Lydia and Nikkos exit the stage.
The Finale
This play takes place during modern times.
The costumes that I will be choosing for the actors will be very modern and fashionable and the costumes will also represent the setting that this play is in.
Historical Period of the Play
In order to ensure that the actors are able to give the best performance, the costumes will be tailored to their stature.
They will be made so that each actor is able to move freely inside the costume. This is so that the actor will be able to use any form of movement that he/she wishes in order to portray their character.
Before finalizing the costumes I will make sure to verbally communicate with the actors in order to make sure that approve the costumes themselves.
Comfort of the Actors
Lydia’s Costume
• Lydia will be wearing this wedding dress throughout the whole play, it will be a traditional wedding dress with nothing too extravagant.
• The reason that this dress is picked is because she is the middle ground out of her two main sisters.
Olympia will be wearing a very flashy dress throughout the whole play.
The reason that I picked this dress for her is because she is the type of person who wants a man to take care of her and in the play she resembles the woman who is flamboyant.
Olympia’s Costume
Thyona will be wearing a wedding dress that is really minimalistic, plain and dark colored.
The reason that I picked this dress for Thyona is because Thyona really fits the stereotype of a very angry feminist, she is the one who first comes up with the idea to kill all of the grooms.
Her dress is also dark colored because of the evil nature of her actions.
Thyona’s Costume
The rest of the 47 Brides and Grooms will be wearing generic dresses and suits.
This is so that they are distinguishable from the main characters.
Side Characters
Color is extremely important when deciding the types of costumes that the character will be wearing.
Each color strikes a different mood with the audience and it is essential that the mood that the color represents be accurate with the characters actions.
In this play for example each of the main characters are wearing something that is quite unique from the other characters, this is to ensure that they are distinguishable and that the color represents their actions.
Thyona for example is wearing a dark dress because her actions are quite questionable and darkness is associated with negative thoughts.
The Importance of Color
