WHY BLOGS ARE BETTERWhat goes on behind the scenes & why it’s cool
I hate “blogs”
Just the word, not the tool WordPress, Drupal, MoveableType are
lightweight Content Management Systems
They are great tools for building websites quickly & easily
Why?
Advantage Blog
Shorter (like almost none) development time Templates that can be changed, updated,
edited without effecting the content at all. Designed to produce and deliver content as
the primary goal Search engine friendly Generally very efficient at delivering content RSS
What kind of stuff can be on there? Static content
“Pages” Dynamic content
Posts Multimedia
Podcasts Video Images
Core components
Database Content Settings
Theme/Template The look and style
Core blog files In PHP, etc Scripts and routines to make stuff happen
What? It’s not magic?
Yeah we wish But it really seems like it sometimes Why is that? Because the parts work well together
Here’s how it all comes together User comes to website WP sends a request to the database for
content WP renders the content through the
template Done.
Getting going
Eeek! Where do I start! Free Freeium Hosted
One click installs (aka Fantastico DeLux) rock
It isn’t hard You need about 15 mins
Geeky as you wanna be
Default isn’t bad It’s just ugly ;-)
Why is this better?
When the design & the content are together in the code
Updating can be less than fun Result:
Websites aren’t updated Agencies charge arms, legs, first-born
children, to make simple changes A “simple change” breaks links and several
pages
Is this the right solution?
Need easily updated content User control Flexible design Static info & a blog SEO tuned Fast initial build out
Which would you rather do?
Worry that updating your site will break something
Or just update your site?
