Butler Act
• It shall be unlawful for any teacher in any of the Universities, Normals and all other public schools of the State to teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.

• Scopes started by saying the Butler Act was wrong because it violated his teaching rights.

On the 7th day of trial, the defense called Bryan to testify.
Darrow asked Bryan questions he would not be able to answer to try to prove the bible can not be followed word for word.

Verdict
After eight days of trial, it took the jury only nine minutes to deliberate. Scopes was found guilty on July 21 and ordered to pay a $100 fine.
