Smaller,  more  personal

(and  harder  to  control)

So:  digital  engagement

100  million  hours

200  billion  hours

£5,500

£153,516

Made  possible  by:

Access  to  the  internet

Access  to  compuCng

A  nice  user  interface

Some  principles

1.  Online  communiCes  are  communiCes  too!

2.  Engage  people  on  their  terms,  not  yours.

3.  Culture  maOers  more  than  tech

Openess  Transparency  CollaboraCon  CooperaCon

4.  Don’t  assume  that  everyone  is  offline.

5.  InteracCve  websites  need  interacCve  organisaCons

The  toolkit

1.  Go  where  people  are  2.  Right  tool,  right  crowd

Use  in  community  safety

This  stuff  works

You  must  understand  why  you’re  doing  it  though!

Think  strategically

What  are  you  trying  to  achieve?

What  are  you  asking  people  to  do?

Change  percepCons?

Change  behaviour?

Improve  services?

In  summary:

The  change  is  happening:  deal  with  it

Solve  the  parCcipaCon  deficit

Know  why  you’re  doing  what  you’re  doing

Thank  you  for  listening!
