What is figurative language?
• Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language.
Imagery in poetry
• Poets often create images or enhance meaning by comparing one thing to another for special effect.
Figurative Language
• means more than what it says on the surface.
• It usually gives us a feeling about its subject.
Figurative Language
• Poets use figurative language and literal language.
• Conscious of the difference.
• Otherwise, a poem may make no sense at all.

• Also known as descriptive language, or poetic language–figurative language helps
the writer paint a picture in the reader’s mind.
