ארבעה עשר מי יודע?
I know fourteen.
fourteen are the simanimof the Seder.
The Wha?!
The simanim סימנים:The easy-to-remember names given to each step of the Seder.
You see, seder means order;and the seder night is all about
doing things in order.
And this is how it goes:
קדש
(1) KADDESH - reciting the kiddush
ורחץ
(2) U'RCHATZ - washing your hands (first time)
(3) KARPAS - dipping the vegetable in salt water
כרפס
יחץ
(4) YACHATZ - breaking the matzah in two
מגיד
(5) MAGGID - reading the haggadah
רחצה
(6) RACHTZA - washing your hands (second time)
(7) MOTZEE MATZAH - eating the matzah
מוציא מצה
מרור
(8) MAROR - eating the bitter herb
כורך
(9) KORECH - the matzah & bitter herb sandwich
שולחן עורך
(10) SHULCHAN ORECH - the meal
צפון
(11) TZAFOON - eating the afikoman
ברך
(12) BARECH - the grace after meal
הלל
(13) HALLEL - singing the praise
נרצה
(14) NIRTZAH - wrap-up sing-along
