REPENTANCE

MATTHEW 4:17

1 7From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

ACTS 2:38a38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.”

101 TIMES

The word repentance was used 101 times, in the scripture and is seldom used or understood in our day.  As a culture, we are obsessed with being positive. Pain and sorrow are to be avoided and happiness is the goal.

REPENTANCE IS NOTGOD

WANTING YOU

TO FEEL LIKE A FAILURE

ACTS 3: 1 – 10

PETER HEALS A

LAME BEGGAR

ACTS 3: 1 – 10 1One day Peter and John were

going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.  3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money.

ACTS 3: 1 – 10  4 Peter looked straight at him,

as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.  6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.

ACTS 3: 1 – 10  8 He jumped to his feet and

began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.  9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

ACTS 3: 1919 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

WHAT IS REPENTANCE

?

REPENTANCE IS:A

CHANGED MIND

METANOIA(met-an'-oy-ah); A change of mind that leads to changed behavior

2 CORINTHIANS7:9-10

9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10

Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death

HOW DO YOU VIEW YOUR SIN?

•Through your own inconvenience and annoyance or;

•Through a changed mind… viewing it as something that breaks the heart of God.

ROMANS 12:22 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

REPENTANCE IS:

IS A CHANGED DIRECTION

EZEKIEL 14:66 "Therefore say to the people of Israel, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!’”

A DIVINELY CHANGED MIND

WILL ALWAYS RESULT IN A CHANGED DIRECTION

REVELATION 2:4-5 NASB

4 ‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.   5‘Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first…

PRODIGALSON

LUKE 15:17-24 17 But when he came to [a]his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18 I will get up and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and [b]in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me as one of your hired men.”’

20 So he got up and came to [c]his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and [d]embraced him and kissed him.  21  And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

LUKE 15:17-24

22 But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

LUKE 15:17-24

ROMANS 2:4 NASB

4 ‘Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
