An Introduction to Cathy LoveOccupational Therapist, Coach, Author and Speaker

For first time readers a quick intro, I am Cathy Love and I am the founding director of Nacre Consulting

and I work with parents and disability service providers to achieve brilliant outcomes for children with special needs. I

provide a range of services:

• Private practice coaching to business owners.

• Family Service Coaching for parents to help them manage their child’s team and services.

• Clinical supervision to individuals and allied health professional teams.

• Service delivery consultation to disability service providers.

More to be read about all that over on my website www.nacre.com.au.

Each month I write up news, useful information and pearls of wisdom for those working with children and families in

the disability sector. Given that it is a rapidly changing landscape and one that is increasingly privatised there is

typically lots of news to be shared.

PRODUCTIVITY HACKS:WHAT YOU COULD BE DOING BETTER

Despite working long and mostly productive hours, my to-do list

never shortens. I continue to read, reach out to others, and

implement new productivity tricks. Here is my current best

thinking on GSD, a.k.a. ‘Getting Stuff Done.’

• Default Diary. Management Monday has made a huge difference in my ability to work ON the business not IN it.

• ‘Time Blocking.’ I block out time in my diary to do specific tasks.

• ‘Colour Coding.’ No big surprise with the OT’ness of this.

• Productivity and time management apps.

• Accountability to others.

• Practice management software

• Notes. I dump ideas, conversations, to-dos, and so on, into an old

school notebook.

HOW HR COMPLIANT ARE YOU?

We recently sent out a survey to a number of small businesses in a wide

range of industries, to ascertain how compliant they are around current

employment legislation.

The main issues centred on three key areas – hiring, performance and

culture. The main results were as follows:

1. A significant number of businesses do not review salaries annually.

2. 86% of respondents had fired someone, predominantly for non-

performance or fraud.

3. 60% did not have a Workplace Health and Safety Policy in place and

many were unaware of their legal obligations in this space.

4. 45% did not have a company policy on Sexual Harassment, Bullying

and EEO

There is a whole world of scheduling tools for Instagram out there, just like there is for other social media platforms, including Hootsuite, Onlypult and Tailwind. We have stumbled across a particular program called Later.

• How does it work? Later is a simple scheduling and managing tool

for Instagram. It lets you plan your content, grow your audience,

and share your photos and videos.

• Why we recommend Later: - Ease of use There is a “Free Plan” which allows 30

free posts each Month, “Search and Repost” Media Library” - upload, store and

manage all of you photos and videos across any device.

Do you dream of being able to plan and schedule

your Instagram posts?

HOW TO PREVENT STAFF FROM LEAVING WITH YOUR CLIENTS

There are some ways to minimise the risk of this happening, and I wish to spare all of our readers this pain.

• Having a strong and legally correct and drawn contract of

engagement. Yes there will be an upfront cost for this, but as your

business grows, this document will be well used. Please seek legal

advice.

• Protecting your Intellectual Property. Your contracts and “Policy

and Procedure Manual” should contain information about your

Intellectual Property and its use.

• Talk to your staff. Make it clear that you are fair and

reasonable, but that there is a line that can be crossed in terms of

respectful and professional behaviour.

• Assertively manage relationships personally with all your current

and new referrers. They need to know who you are, why you do

what you do, and that you are the backbone of the business.

“It’s important to think out your position on staff

leaving with clients”

It is important to know who your ideal client is. Who do you really want to

work with? .

It is hard to directly message your target market, so we need to find those

who already know them. We call this group of people your market and they

are the people your market to. When done well they will be active referrers to

your service and they will tell their colleagues.

We are in the business of building trusting relationships. Referrers will need

to get to know you, hear you, see you, read your material, meet with you and,

most importantly, hear positive stories from your clients.

The three P’s can help get your message out.

• People

• Pixel – get active on social media,

• Paper

”Allocate one hour on the first working day of the month to write your

marketing plan”.
