Sleep is a periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness (awareness).

Knock out video

Sleep is a periodic, natural, reversible loss of consciousness (awareness).

Distinctly different from loss of consciousness from coma, alcohol, or Mr. Gifford’s fists of fury.

Sleep is a part of our natural biological rhythms.

Our bodies go through cycles controlled by an internal clock.

Sleep is part of our 24 Hour Cycle.

Sleep is broken down into a 90 Minute Cycle.

The technical name for our biological clock.

Our body clock is synchronized with the natural 24 hour day.

The rhythm is like a roller coaster.

I don’t feel so good.

Adolescent tiredness in morning classes is biologically ok….

But don’t sleep in class!!!

Most students out grow this ‘tired morning’ syndrome by early to mid 20’s.

Sleep has its own rhythm of 5 stages.

The average sleep cycle ( all 5 stages) lasts around 90 mins.

Stages of sleep range from light sleep to deep sleep to dreams.

We fall into sleep without ever knowing it.

Characterized by hallucinations and imagery.

Sensations of falling or weightlessness.

Characterized by bundles of intense brain activity.

People can still be easily awakened in stage 2.

Sleep talking occurs in this stage. (somniloquy)

Baby sleep talking

Dog talking

Brain emits large, slower brain waves.

Delta waves are the deep, slow waves that characterize deep sleep.

Hard to wake people in this stage.

Stage 4 is the precursor to the dreaming stage.

We are still aware of our surroundings.

ie: won’t fall out of bed or crush our kids in bed.

REM sleep baby vid

An hour after falling asleep you are roused back into activity.

Your heat rate increases, your breathing becomes rapid and irregular.

WELCOME TO DREAMLAND and REM sleep.

In REM sleep, every 30 seconds your eyes dart behind your eye lids.

REM signals a dream has started.

80% of those who can’t remember dreams, will do so when awakened during REM.

I love turtles

Brainstem blocks messages from ‘new’ brain, essentially leaving you paralyzed.

Your body is internally active and externally calm.

I’m stuck.

37% of ‘non-dreamers’ spend 600 hours a year dreaming.

They dream about 1500 dreams a year or 100,000 dreams over their lifetime.

People who snore rarely snore during REM, dreams start, snoring stops.

Dreams are a sequence of images, emotions and thoughts that pass through a sleeper’s mind.

What are they really….

It depends on who you ask.

Most dreams involve activities from your day.

8 in 10 dreams have a negative aspect to them.

Women dream about men and women equally as often.

65% of the characters in men’s dreams are males.

Freud feels our dreams are mostly the storyline of the day, but secretly they have hidden meanings.

Sleep is not just biologically necessary.

The duration of sleep we get is influenced by our genetics and culture.

No two people’s sleep needs are the same.

The average person needs 7-9 hours of sleep per night to be at peak functioning.

Our brains can remember “sleep debt” for 2 weeks and it just can’t be slept off in one big night.

It is easier to see why if we look at why not sleep.

You will spend 25 years of your life sleeping.

Without enough, you are………………

1. Insomnia 2. Narcolepsy 3. Sleep Apnea 4. Night Terrors

63% of those who said they had enough sleep also said they are very satisfied with their lives.

1. Darkness interrupted our ancestors’ hunter/gatherer lifestyle, so they slept.

2. Sleep helps us recuperate, mind and body.

3. Sleep helps us restore and organize our memories.

4. Sleep helps us grow…literally, by regulating hormones in the body.

Use this paper to jot down any notes if you happen to wake in the middle of the night or use first thing in the morning. This is not the journal itself, but will help you to write out your journal online. Remember, the journals online are private, but use discretion when posting information.
