Food is Fuel

• Hunger is a message from your body that it needs food for energy

• The body operates on food, like a car operates on fuel

• Teen years require more food, the right foods, because of fast growth

Nutrition is a science that studies the

substances in foods and how the body

uses them.

Nutrients are substances in food

that your body needs. They keep you healthy

and help you grow.

The Six Nutrients

1. Carbohydrates

• Main source of energy

• Sugars: fruit, milk and table sugar

• Starches: bread, rice, pasta, potatoes

• Fiber: raw fruits, raw veggies, whole wheat and whole grains – can not digest fiber

2. Proteins

• Growth and repair of cells

• Eat anytime during the day

• Breakfast: Eggs & dairy products

• Lunch/Dinner: Meat and seafood

• Side Dishes: Rice and beans

3. Fats

• Poor source of energy

• Little amounts are ok, large amounts lead to weight gain and other health problems

• Poor health habits at an early age

• Salad dressings, fast foods, donuts, fries

4. Vitamins

• Not a source of energy - Help regulate body

• Found in fruits and green vegetables

A: helps your eyesight; meat, milk, eggs

C: fights off infection; fruits, veggies

D: absorption of calcium into bones; milk, eggs

E: repairs cell damage; oils, fats, nuts, eggs

K: blood clotting; leafy green vegetables, grains

5. Minerals • Not a source of energy - Help regulate body

• Most foods contain minerals

– Milk, meat, fruits, vegetables, whole-grain cereals

• Calcium: bones, teeth, muscles, blood-clotting

• Iron: transports oxygen to your body parts

• Potassium: muscle and nerve activity

• Sodium: high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke; found in fries, bacon, ham, cheese

6. Water• Not a source of energy

• Carries nutrients around your body

• Helps with digestion of food

• Removes waste out of your body

• Cools you off

• 6-8 cups a day, 10-12 in hotter weather, active

• Juices, milk, fruit and vegetables contain water

• Did you know?! Your body can survive weeks without food, but only days without water!!
