The Aesthetics of Film

Goal: To evaluate interview research and determine effectiveness.

Write the name of each student who is going to share on a half sheet of paper.

You are going to need to decide if the student's interview was effective, so take some notes about what you think made this an effective interview (or ineffective, for that matter).

Goal: To analyze the elements of film and the impact they have on the viewer.

If we look at poetry, novels, and short stories all as literature, then we must also look at film as a form of literature.

Because film has visual and audio aspects that a print-text does not have, it can be analyzed on several different levels.

The scenery and various elements of this set design create a whimsical feel, which contributes to the director’s vision for the film.

The dynamic effect of this scene is created by careful prop choice and placement. Thousands of props are used in this scene. The combination of flags, swords, and

shields makes this a powerful image.

What movies can you think of where the artistic director has

done an excellent job of using mise-en-scene to tell the

story?

The choices made about lighting effects and camera images in a film. This includes color, space, focus, depth of field, camera angles, POV, composition, movement, aspect ratios, light and lighting, atmosphere. 

Robert Elswit’s artistic use of light, color, and shadow in There Will Be Blood won him

an Academy Award.

In this shot from Brokeback Mountain, the cinematographer has framed the scene so that Jake Gyllenhaal looks larger than Heath Ledger. In addition, the framing of the shot places the white sheep against the trees and water, using the reflection of the water to create a soft lighting for the scene.

These shots from American Beauty all highlight the central symbol in American Beauty, roses. The lighting in the movie is also consistently dark, reflecting the dark mood and theme of the film.

What films can you think of with a very unique visual

look?

recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a film. This can be music in the background of scenes with dialogue and events, or music that is the focus of the scene.

Composer John Williams’ original musical scores have won him several Academy Awards. His

credits include Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, ET, Indiana Jones,

Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park, & Harry Potter.

The design and effects of the appearance of characters. This includes clothing, footwear, hats, as well as masks, make-up, hair, etc.
