Whats In a Cell

The Nucleus

Nucleus●The biggest organelle in any eukaryotic cell●Membranebound organelle●Communitcates with cytosol●Inside the nucleus is the DNA

The Nucleolus

●The nucleolus is inside the nucleus●Produces ribosomes which move out of the nucleus and onto the rough

endoplasmic reticulum and are used for protein

The cytosol and cytoplasm

●The cytosol is almost like our blood, its like soup where all the other ogranelles sit

●Where most of the cellular metabolism occurs ●Cytoplasm is the collective term for the cytosoll and all the other

organelles

The Centrosome and Centriole

●Area of cell where microtubles are produced●Centrosome is actually a pair of little organelles called centrioles ●Each centriole is a ring of 9 groups of fused microtubles

Golgi

●Membrane bound structure, only one membrane

●Stacked membarne vesicles used to transport macromolecules to other places in the cell

Lysosome

●Contain hydrolytic enzymes that are needed for intracellular digestion

●Carefully released into the vacuole around bacteria and serve to kill and digest those bacteria

Peroxisomes

●Responsible for protecting the cell from its own toxic hydrogen peroxide

●Oxidative enzymes in peroxisomes help break down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen

Secretory Vesicle

●Cell secretions (hormones, neurotransmitters etc.) Are packaged into secretory vesicles at the golgi apparatus and then transported out of the cell

Cell Membrane

●Every cell is enclosed in a membrane

Mitochondrion

●Provides the cell with energy it needs to do everything e.g. move, divide, produces secretory products, contract etc.

Vacuole

●Is a membranebound sac that helps with intracellular digestion and helps to release waste products

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

●Plays different roles depending on cell type●Includes lipid and steroid hormone synthesis,

break-down of lipid-soluble toxins in liver cells, and control of calcium release in muscle cell contraction

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

●Lots of ribosomes on its surface●Proteins synthesized gather in the reticulum to be

transported throughout the cell

Ribosomes

●Packets of RNA and protein that play a very important role to both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells

●Site of protein synthesis

Cytoskeleton

●Helps maintain cell shape●Mostly important to maintain cell motility●Works with three primary protein filaments●- microtubles●- actin filaments●- intermediate fibers
