Video Gaming in Libraries 101

Preview:

DESCRIPTION

Video games are a new thing to libraries, but they've been well established in our culture for over 30 years. In order to reach out to all of our unique patron groups, video games in libraries should be embraced by librarians as a way to connect with our community. This presentation will focus on educating librarians on how to start a video gaming program at their public library. Taking a simple, cost effective approach, the aim of this presentation is to remove any worries about gaming in libraries and instead replace them with positive, forward thinking ideas. START SIMPLE...

Gamers are social people.

The recent rise in online gaming  shows that we all want to be connected to one

another.

Why not give this audience a place to play video games in public?

START PROGRAMMING

$500

Wii console, $200

Wii Play (+”free” remote), $50

Wii Sports Resort (+”free” Wii Motion Plus attachment), $50

Mario Kart Wii, $50

2 extra Wii remotes, $80

3 extra Wii Motion Plus attachments, $60

8 pack of rechargeable AA batteries, $10

START A COLLECTION

Cost.

Gaming isn't cheap, that’s for sure.

Use the same principles when developing video game collections

that we do to other material collections

via @LibrarianJP

PLAN AHEAD

• Understand the cost of video games

• Provide those that fund the collection with specifics on cost

•  BUY USED! (allows more bang for your buck)

• Start small

My recommendation?

Invest $7,500 to $10,000 to start.

After that, plan on making 3-4 purchases per year.

Emphasize how your library will be reaching out to a new population of users and how through this program those users will be more likely to attend other library

events and use the library for their media needs.

GIVE YOUR COMMUNITY WHAT THEY WANT!
