The Writing Process

Most people learn about the writing process in grade school or high school

They practice it repeatedly in college or university

The steps necessary to create effective documents are as follows

Analyze your audience Analyze your purpose Generate ideas about your topic Research information Structure and outline your document

Planning

Write quickly without stopping to revise If you must stop, stop in the middle of a

section. Then, pick up where you left off

Drafting

Reconsider your audience. Are you still meeting their needs?

Reconsider your purpose. Have you identified your goals?

Reconsider your structure and development. Does the document flow and is it organized in a logical sequence?

Revising

Let the document sit at least overnight before you revise it

Edit the document carefully for grammar, punctuation, style, etc.

Format the document carefully. Make sure it is appropriate to your organization and your audience

Proofread the document carefully, and have another person proofread it if possible

Editing and Proofreading

Are you sensitive to the audience? Do your paragraphs begin with a topic sentence? Is your wording straightforward, concise and natural? Is your wording precise? Do you avoid general terms like "a

large increase"? Do you use concise wording and strong verbs? Do you achieve grammatical parallelism in lists and headings? Do you use relatively short sentences? Do you use relatively short paragraphs? Are your verbs the appropriate tense? Do you link new information to known or previously acquired

information? Have you checked and double-checked grammar, punctuation

and spelling?
