Chapter 4 Section 4

Resources, Trade, and the

Enviroment

ResourcesAs people use more

non-renewable resources (minerals and fossil fuels), scientists work on alternatives.

Renewable resources like Hydroelectric (water), solar (sun), wind, and nuclear energy are some options.

Economic DevelopmentNatural resources

are not evenly distributed on Earth.

In developed countries, a small portion of people work in agriculture.

In developing countries, most people are farmers.

IndustrializationIndustrialization has

recently helped change the economics in countries that once relied on agriculture.

Example: China and

Malaysia

TerrorismCertain militant

groups in developing countries have used terrorism to counter the global influence of developed countries.

Barriers to TradeCountries trade b/c of

the unequal distribution of natural resources.

Countries often add tariffs to imported goods or set limits on how much can be imported.

When a country bans trade with another country it is called an embargo.

Free TradeThe World Trade

Organization promotes free trade internationally.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has removed trade barriers between US, Mexico, and Canada.

Water PollutionWater pollution

include…….

- oil spills- chemical waste- animal waste- untreated sewer

Example: BP oil spill in the

Gulf

Land PollutionResults from……. - unsanitary

dumpsites- radioactive waste- chemical waste

Air PollutionThe burning of fossil

fuels be vehicles and industries cause air pollution.

Burning fuels give off gases and combine with precipitation to form acid rain, which can destroy whole forests.

The Fragile EcosystemPeople can help

protect the environment by……..

- Treating water- Preserving wilderness

areas- Recycling

- Using alternative fuels
