• For one syllable verbs - double the consonant and add -ING
jog – jogging sit – sitting run – running stop – stopping
• For two syllable verbs
a) If the 1st syllable is stressed, just add ING
answer – answering offer – offering listen – listening visit – visiting
b) If the 2nd syllable is stressed , double the consonant and add ING
admit – admitting prefer – preferring begin – beginning
Gerund (Gerúndio)
O gerúndio é a forma verbal caracterizada pela terminação -ing. Usa-se o gerúndio:
1. Como substantivo:
Singing is her favorite hobby.
(Cantar é o "hobby" preferido dela.)

2. Após preposições:
Após uma preposição (about, against, at, in, of, for, on, after, before, etc.), o verbo vem sempre na forma -ing;
After resting I'll make the bed. (Depois que eu descansar vou arrumar a cama.)
Without knowing what to do, I went home earlier. (Sem saber o que fazer, fui para casa mais cedo.)
Before opening the letter, she took a deep breath. (Antes de abrir a carta, ela respirou fundo.)
You can save 10% by booking on the internet. (Você pode economizar 10% reservando pela internet.)
She screamed instead of speaking softly. (Ela gritou ao invés de falar suavemente.)
3. Com a função de objeto direto e objeto indireto (com preposição):
I miss playing baseball every day.
(Sinto falta de jogar beisebol todos os dias.)
I enjoy reading.
(Eu gosto de ler.)
