Impressionist Animal Grid Paintings

Impressionism• Started in 1874 by a group of rogue artists in Paris:

– Edgar Degas– Claude Monet– Camille Pissarro– Alfred Sisley– Pierre-Auguste Renoir– Gustave Caillebotte– Mary Cassatt– Berthe Morisot– Edouard Manet

• Rogue because they were rejected by the Salon (the big-wigs of the Art world at the time)..eventually the Salon came around and accepted Impressionism

Impressionism

• Name came from Monet’s “Impression, Sunrise” (1873) when critic Louis Leroy accused it of being an unfinished “impression.”

Impressionism

• Qualities of Impressionism:– Unfinished, sketch-like– Short, broken brushstrokes that barely convey

forms– Pure, unblended colors (even though they are

pastel-like, they were way brighter than traditional paintings!)

– Emphasis on the effects of light– Often used color for highlights and shadows instead

of using white and black

Impressionism

– Depicted modern life (often in the countryside rather than the city…new, modern railroads made traveling to the country from Paris easy and convenient)

– Portrayed fleeting moments in time– Rejected tradition in Art– Used new technologies and ideas (like synthetic

pigments in paint…cerulean blue, ultramarine blue…)– Often feature landscapes with industrialization

(railroads, factories, etc.)

Impressionism

– When Paris is depicted, artists focused on the new renovations after the Franco-Prussian War (population increase, public gardens, new buildings).

– Sometimes the focus is on cityscapes, sometimes on Parisians and new leisure activities: • Working class: singers and dancers

– Degas and Caillebotte

• Privileged class: theater-goers and mothers with children– Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot.

Impressionism

• The Impressionist movement didn’t last long because its members started developing their own unique styles and going their separate ways:– Neo-Impressionism (Georges Seurat and Paul Signac:

Pointillism) – Primitivism (Paul Gauguin)– Post-Impressionism (Vincent Van-Gogh, Paul

Cézanne)– Cubism (Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso)
