Henri Matisse was a French painter.

Born in 1869.

Died in 1954.

Considered a “master” of color.

He became famous for his bold use of colors and patterns.

He liked to paint rooms with bright patterns and details.

He was inspired by rugs from countries like Turkey.

Balance keeps his pictures looking good.

Positive Space = What you draw on the paper.

If a picture is balanced it has about the same amount of

positive space on both sides of the picture.

If a picture is unbalanced, it has more positive space on one side

of the picture than the other.

Think of a scale. If you were to pretend to weigh on each side of the painting, would they

be balanced?
