FOCUS ON LADIES“We are delighted to be sponsoring the Style Awards again this year at Newmarket’s
iconic Moët & Chandon July Festival. There are so many options for ladies attending
a summer race meeting. Whether choosing something bold and bright or opting for
a more subtle pastel shade, every outfit should be well coordinated right down to
the accessories and completed with a beautiful piece of millinery. Sometimes it isn’t
always about the cost of the outfit, but more about how it’s worn. We always look for a
winner that really embraces what The Style Awards is all about, they need to capture
the essence of summer fashion and depict the meaning of elegance and style.”

ADVICE ON A WINNING OUTFIT:
JEMMA HOLLOWAY 2016 BEST DRESSED LADY WINNER
“Stick with shoes that are not crazy high, just so you are comfortable, because you want to
enjoy the day. Having to take your shoes off and walk barefoot and hold your shoes and your
bag, well you haven’t got a spare hand for your champagne, and that’s not on!
Less is more when it comes to your outfit. It’s best, I think, not to show too much flesh. I always
go for something knee length. If you go for a dramatic hat, then the outfit should be
understated. The navy hat I went for had the crystals in it, so I knew I wanted to tie that in a
little bit, but I didn’t want to go over the top with oversized jewellery, which might have taken
the focus away from the hat.
With the dress, if you’re going to wear a dress that is highly printed, that then affects your hat
as you don’t want it to be too busy.”
ANNOUNCING SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE FOR LADIES DAY 2017; CHRISTIAN COWAN-SANLUIS
His outrageous outfits have graced celebrities from Lady Gaga to Miley Cyrus, but on
Ladies’ Day, fashion designer Christian Cowan-Sanluis will be casting his expert eye over
Newmarket’s racegoers. After making his New York Fashion Week debut in February,
when Paris Hilton walked the runway in the glitziest of get-ups, the fashion designer to the
stars is well and truly putting the glitter in glitterati. Described by millionaire heiress Hilton
as an “innovator that takes risks with what he makes”, Christian’s flamboyant designs
have made him THE go-to-guy for glamazons of the celebrity world. Indeed one of his first
collaborations was with queen of crazy couture Lady Gaga, who rocked Christian’s hot pink
sparkly one piece, with matching oversized hat. Within hours, the designer was the toast of
British Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Tatler and Elle. Make sure you enter this year to meet the
home-grown talent who’s making waves on international catwalks.
“I can’t wait to judge the best look at Newmarket’s Moët & Chandon July Festival! I Spend
my days making women look and feel like stars and that’s what I’ll be looking for on Ladies
Day at the races!”

FOCUSON HATS
“This year is an exciting one for hats. Ladies are really making statements and definitely feeling more confident
to wear something that makes them stand out from the crowd.
There is a big mix of hat styles around this season, but the smaller shapes still seem to be what ladies are
wanting. We have lots of striking coloured hats trimmed with sharp feathers, but also plenty of neutral pastel
headpieces that have more movement and are trimmed with pretty florals and feathers.
If your outfit is very busy or has a strong pattern, I would always
recommend to keep the hat simple. Pick out one colour from your
fabric and stick with that throughout the whole hat.
If, however, you have a simple, plain outfit, go for something wild
and striking that will really bring your outfit to life. Race-day
fashion is all about the hats, so I think it’s really important the hat
stands out over any outfit. You also have to wear it all day, so it
should be comfortable, fit you properly and you must feel at ease
wearing it. That’s the key to knowing it’s the right hat for you.!”

“Newmarket’s July Festival is billed by organisers as the ticket of the summer. Racegoers make it a special day by
dressing accordingly. With Ladies’ Day already having a reputation for colour and edgy fashion, why should the
girls have all the fun?
So guys, while dress codes are more relaxed than Royal Ascot, visitors to the Premier Enclosure at Newmarket are
encouraged to imagine they are attending a smart wedding. But wherever you are on the course, the festival
weekend is an opportunity to dress to impress.
This ice blue suit would be perfect for the Premier Enclosure, while the checked suit is another winning look.
The chocolate trilby adds a traditional touch, and the panama has band to pop your betting slips in!”

TOP TIPS FROM LAST YEAR’S BEST DRESSED GENTLEMAN...
ANDREW BONADIES 2016 BEST DRESSED GENTLEMAN WINNER
“I was at The Guineas Festival in the spring and noticed a lot of blokes are dressing the same,
going for navy trousers, maybe with a cream jacket or vice versa, and brown brogues. Even the
hairstyles look similar; slicked back or with a beard that has shaven sides. So I think if someone
wants to win they have to be a little bit more unique, whether that’s through their hair style or
by wearing a more adventurous colour.”
FOCUS ON COUPLES
The Saturday of the Darley July Cup is not only about the
phenomenal Darley July Cup race, but off the track our
focus turns to the co-ordination and style of Newmarket’s
Best Dressed Couple. We’ve put together five handy hints
for that primped and primed duo:
• Do not upstage each other – it’s all about harmonising!
• The definition of a couple is: a duo! So its non-gender
specific, you just need to be pair
• Don’t forget it’s the little touches! From tip to toe every
part of your outfit will be judged.
• Subtle colour matching is a really effective way of
synchronising outfits
• Find inspiration on coordinating from the The Beckhams,
Jay-Z and Beyoncé, through to Ozzy & Sharon. Whatever
your passion, there is a dynamic duo out there to steal
some ideas from.
FOCUS ON GETTING SOCIALDo you think you’re a contender for Best Dressed 2017? Are you meticulously planning your outfit coordinates
with your better half? Or just having fun trying on a dozen hats? We want to see you all planning your outfits
and our favourite pictures will be featured by Newmarket Racecourses before and during the event.

FOCUSON MAKE UP
Ready to claim a podium place at the Ladies’ Day Style Awards? Ahead of the July Festival fashion
event of the year, celebrity make-up artist and hairdresser to the stars Bridgette Ellwood shares her
top tips for race day beauty.
There is much to consider ahead of Ladies’ Day. Make-up is the all-important finishing touch but it has to go the
distance and look good all day. Bridgette Ellwood – who has designed the make-up and hair for the glamorous
Strictly Come Dancing tours and for many a celebrity gracing the pages of the glossies –
will be at Ladies’ Day, demonstrating how to add a winning touch to a hairdo and offering behind-the-scenes
professional tips on beauty and make-up. Plus, the Best Dressed Lady will win a one-to-one session with
Bridgette – worth £500 – as part of her glittering array of prizes. . .
HERE ARE BRIDGETTE’S TOP BEAUTY TIPS FOR RACE DAY:
• Plan a facial for a week before Ladies’ Day. Skin will have the time to settle following the treatment and be at its radiant best on the day.
• False lashes will make eyes pop – the lighter style are perfect for anyone who is a newcomer to falsies.
• A mattifying powder is amazing for absorbing oil and shine and a great product to pop in your handbag – I always have one with me when I am working on set.
• There are lots of conditioning lip balms around that have a pretty colour through them. They are great as they keep lips healthy and moisturised and look lovely too.
