This is how we are going to structure the beginning of

our information text. Remember, as always, you don’t have to stick to this! You can come up with your

own creative ideas too.

Today we are going to focus on the introduction paragraph and appearance.

53

LO: To write an information text. This is my example of an introduction.

I’m sure you can do better, but it might give you an idea of the type of

information you could include.

The Sting Mantiss – A True Predator

IntroductionOriginating in the lush green land, alongside the River Nile, the Sting Mantiss is a mini beast like no other. Possessing impressive strength, this creature has the potential to create chaos and havoc across the entire planet – not just in its country of origin, Egypt. This invertebrate is diminutive in size, but deadly in nature. Numbers of this animal are increasing at an astonishing rate - there have been more than double the number of sightings in the last year alone. Such an increase in numbers has led to scientists and experts taking drastic measures to ensure that the general public are informed about the nature of the Sting Mantiss.

54

LO: To write an information text.

Write your introduction about your mini beast.

Don’t forget to include a main title and subtitle.

Try to maintain a high level of formality to ensure that it is written in the style of an information text.

Task One IntroductionWhere does the mini beast originate? What is the creature’s potential? Does it have a super power? Are the numbers increasing or decreasing? Why do scientists want to inform the public?

Some ideas to get you started, but remember to be as creative as you like!

55

LO: To write an information text. This is my example of an appearance section. I’m sure you can do better, but it might give you an idea of the

type of information you could include.

Appearance

With its easily distinguished black and yellow body – similar to a bumblebee – the Mantisshas a visual design that is easily identified. In order to intimidate its prey, a stinger unfurls itself from the rear of the mini beast, in addition to the grasping, clutching mandibles at the front. Poisonous venom seeps from every orifice. Resting menacingly above these razor-sharp pincers, lie two dark gold orbs nestled into an emerald blanket of coarse fur. Fluttering wings emerge from the creature’s body, reaching outwards to the sky, a blur of motion. Wings are not the only method of transport utilised by the Sting Mantiss.

Continues on the next

page!

56

LO: To write an information text. This is my example of an appearance section. I’m sure you can do better, but it might give you an idea of the

type of information you could include.

Appearance - Continued

Extending elegantly from beneath the main body of the beast, five elongated legs search through the surrounding area, eternally questing for food. Containing no less than fifty nerve ends, each leg has the ability to gather a wreath of information regarding everything they come into contact with. In certain extreme circumstances, each leg can be detached and reattached at will, dependent on both the situation and the habitat. Every feature of this creature combines to create a beast of minor proportions, yet major potential consequences.

57

LO: To write an information text.

Write your appearance section about your mini beast.

Don’t forget to include a new subtitle.

Try to maintain a high level of formality to ensure that it is written in the style of an information text.

LO: To relax with a book and develop reading skillsYour first task is to spend a little time reading a book of your choice to help you relax and unwind.

Perhaps you could read outside if the weather is nice or read somewhere nice and quiet inside.

On the school website under ‘Year 6’, click on the ‘Extra Reading Resources and Challenges for KS2’.

These are the challenges that you can choose from.

Once you’ve finished a little bit of reading for about 20 minutes, we would like you to complete a reading challenge of your choice. Pick one or two that you know you will enjoy completing. Try to pick something different from last week.
