Reinforced Soil Retaining SystemsThe application of reinforced soil retaining systems can optimise the utilisation of valuable development land. The technology dates back to ancient civilisations and has been used for hundreds of years to achieve the cost effective and rapid construction of stable steep slopes and walls.
Particular benefits include:
1. Potential to use local (on-site) fill materials bringing associated financial and environmental cost savings from reduced transport, disposal and fill import.
2. Simple construction based on the traditional earthworks skillset removes the requirement for expensive specialist labour or plant and delays associated with training
3. Normally a foundation is not required and there is no distinction between structural fill and backfill leading coincident placement and rapid construction.
4. Unlike concrete structures there arepost-construction delays as reinforced soil structures are generally available for loading on completion.
Construction not heavily weather dependent hence avoiding programme delays
TCS Geotechnics reinforcement solutions offer a range of stable structures allow a variety of different facing solutions including vegetated finishes, stone finishes and reinforced block wall.
Typical applications include:Retaining walls, bridge ramps and abutments, rockfall and noise protection bunds.

TECHCELL
Techcell in Ground Stabilisation
Cellular confinement systems are three dimensional honeycombed cellular structures that form a confinement system when infilled with compacted soil. HDPE strips are welded together ultrasonically in series to create cells, the strips are expanded to form the stiff (solid or perforated) walls of a flexible 3D cellular mattress or slab. Whenthese cells are infilled with appropriate materials to suit site conditions, a new composite entity is created from the cell soil interactions.
The cellular structure laterally reduces the movement of infill particles, thereby facilitating and maintaining excellentcompaction and forms a stiffened mattress or slab that distributes loads over a wider area. The result is high bearing capacity even from inferior fill material, reduction of structural layer thickness and long term durability. Cellular confinement systems have a multitude of applications including slope protection and earth retention.
11T: 01942 218597 E:sales@tcs-geotechnics.co.ukwww.tcs-geotechnics.co.uk
Slope ProtectionTechcell increases the soils
natural erosion resistance by confining the soil preventing it
from slipping or being eroded. The exposed cells offer the opportunity for vegetation to flourish and provide a green face. Perforated cell walls offer drainage through the system, solving issues with hydrostatic build up and providing constant flow of water for root growth.
Channel ProtectionTechcell acts to increase shear strength of infill materials against the flow of water. It can be used as an alternative to concrete lined channels, or in conjunction with concrete where the Techcell acts as an inbuilt expansion joint. Water passes over the confined infill with the force of the water flow counteracted by the resistance of the Techcell.
Tree root protection Road and pavement reinforcement Slope and channel protection & stability Earth retention for banks & slopes
Earth Walls
Reservoir and landfill protection
Vegetative slope confinement/erosion control
Techcell is available in several thicknesses from 50mm to 200mm deep for a range of granular infills, providing slope stabilisation and reinforcement.
Techcell uses the confinement of infills to provide load support and erosion control for many situations. Once suitably filled, it provides a stable surface for both pedestrian and trafficked areas such as driveways, paths, car parks, golf courses and embankments.
Load SupportCellular systems provides additionalreinforcement to infill materials by distributing the loads laterally across the extent of the system. Infill requirements can be reduced by up to 50% reducing excavation depths and offering savings on both money and time.
Earth RetentionTechcell layered vertically
becomes an earth retention system that can be used to
construct an earth retaining wall or slope.
Utilising Techcell in this application offers the opportunity for a natural looking finish which can be aesthetically pleasing. Normally local infill materials can also be utilised, offering cost savings
to the contractor.

Tree Root Protection
Trees renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen.
The amount of oxygen produced by an acre of trees per year equals the amount consumed by 18 people annually. One tree
produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year. One acre of trees removes up to 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide each year. As you can see from
the statements above trees are extremely important in todays environment. They also provide aesthetic value in visually softening and screening buildings, absorb noise and provide important habitats for wildlife. Whilst tree roots can help stabilize soil and help prevent erosion, they are at constant risk of damage. The preservation of trees in a local environment is beneficial to both residents and local communities.
The Problem
With increased pressure for housing in the UK, the requirements to build access roads, driveways, car parks and hard standings near to established trees is on the rise.Traditional construction methods in these situations can cause damage to the trees roots, weakening or killing the tree. Tree roots tend to be present within the first 600mm of the depth of the soil and extend from the tree trunk to a distance equal to approximately 70% of the tree’s height. A high percentage of the crushing damage caused to these roots takes place as the first construction vehicles pass over the site.
Tree Preservation Orders
Techcell is an APn12 compliant no dig solution. The BSI has published guidance notes BS55837:2005 on how to protect trees during development.
TECHCELL
Damage to feeder roots is mainly caused by:
Compaction of surface soils by vehicular traffic - which causes reduced oxygen and nutrient
exchange between the roots and surrounding soils.

Declining tree roots
So What Is The Soltion?
Where access or hard standing areas are planned adjacent to trees, the Local
Planning Authority will specify a no dig construction to eliminate the damage associated with traditional
construction methods. No removal of surface soils is allowed utilising this method of construction.
Instead, a permeable structural sub base (Techcell) is applied directly onto the existing ground which is then overlaid by a permeable wearing course, such as Techpave grass reinforcement, block paving or an other permeable solution laid over the top.
No dig construction can be accommodated with the use of perforated Techcell geocellular confinement system in the sub base layer. Techcell reduces the overall depth of construction though a cellular structure which dissipates downward loads by horizontally transferring these loads through the cell structure.
This system in conjunction with the perforated cell wall also gives structural integrity to free draining aggregates which would otherwise be unacceptable in road construction. Utilising the Techcell system offers a shallow, robust and free draining sub base, which allows for site access along with allowing water and oxygen to permeate down to the tree roots keeping the tree healthy.
Severance of roots during site excavations.
Impermeable wearing courses such as tarmacadam or concrete - this prevents surface water permeating to the root system starving the tree of much needed nutrients

Turf Reinforcing Mats
Techmat TRM
TCS Geotechnics Techmat TRM grass reinforcement mesh is an ideal product to protect grass from pedestrians and light vehicles. It can be used for car parking and access routes, enabling existing grass spaces to be utilised without causing rutting, sinking or smearing of the grass. The mesh is a tough, flexible, long lasting polymer grid used to permanently reinforce grassed areas, preventing them from rutting and becoming muddy when used by vehicles and pedestrians.
It is essential that the grass is allowed to grow through the mesh before use to ensure that the surface is safe and strong. The mesh vanishes as the grass grows through, leaving the natural appearance of a grassed area.

Erosion Control
Techmat
Techmat biodegradable mattings and blankets act as protection to sloped areas, preventing soil loss and slope instability, while providing an excellent microclimate for seeds to germinate. Cut or formed soil runs the risk of erosion from wind and water, and if left uncovered the risk of instability and soil run off is high. The use of an erosion control mat instantly reduces the risk whilst vegetation isestablished.
Techmat P (permanent)
Techmat type P is a range of non-biodegradable erosion control mats manufactured from polypropylene. Suitable for all situations where a biodegradable erosion control mat is unsuitable (i.e. water channels) in conjunction with natural vegetation. When installed and filled with top soil Techmat type P provides excellent erosionprotection. As the vegetation establishes theroots become entwined within the structureof the Tecmat type P. This provides anchoragefor the vegetation to resist high water flowvelocities.

T: 01942 218597 E:sales@tcs-geotechnics.co.ukwww.tcs-geotechnics.co.uk20
TCS Geotechnics offer an extensive range of geocomposite drainage and gas ventingsystems.
Techdrain comprises a cuspated HDPE core, offering high strengths and high flow rates and a geotextile filter layer on one or both sides. It can also be manufactured with a full geotextile wrap with core thicknesses avail-able from 4mm up to 25mm. The polypropylene geotextile acts as a filter and is bonded to the core to ensure that backfill does not get into the core area and a continuous drainage void is maintained.
BenefitsCompared with the traditional stone drainage layers, Techdrain geocomposites are much thinner while having superior flow capacity. This offers huge savings on expensive imported fill. Reductions in excavation can be achieved against traditional construction methods, easy and quick installation offers further savings on man hours. A vast range is available to suit any application. StructuralTechdrain can be used either horizontally or vertically in applications such as buried structures, bridge abutments, basement walls and behind retaining walls, giving high performance flow whilst maintaining its integrity even under extreme loads.
Techdrain
Block paving drainageTechcell can be used in block paving to enhance drainage and prevent the sand layer from becoming too satu-rated. This is especially important when heavy loads are applied above the block paving and the foundation layer is relatively impermeable (e.g. concrete, roof decks etc.).
Sports field drainage Incorporating Techdrain within sport fields can offer significant savings against the traditional method of perforated pipes and filter stone. Manufactured at 25mm wide Techdrain S25 is available in depths from 100mm to 300mm and can easily be installed in a trench just 10mm wider. This results in less disturbance of the playing surface than encountered with laying pipes and gravel and also reduced excavation material that requires removing from site.
Edge of highway drainage/fin drains Techdrain Findrains can be produced for edge of highway drainage. These products are cost effective when compared to traditional granular methods as there is no need to excavate large trenches or import expensive aggregate. Findrain is available in various depths. Landfill drainage and venting Techdrain can be utilised in leachate drainage and gas venting layers on landfill caps.
