What do you know?

There’s several areas you want to review to succeed in Advanced Algebra.

Go through all the area. You can advance at your own pace but you must be able to master these skills. I’ll

test you in class to make sure you understand and help you during work time to strength skills that need it.

Master• Solving equations• Evaluating• Simplifying• Graphing

SOLVING EQUATIONS

𝟏 .𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖Now, you COULD use trial and error and guess what the answer

would be. That will work but after awhile it gets time consuming.

GOLDEN RULE of EQUATION SOLVING # 1 : What you do mathematically to one side you must do to the other! (This

keeps both sides of the equations balanced.)

Let’s minus a 4 from BOTH sides of the equation. That will get rid of the 4 on the left!

𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖- 4 - 4

−𝟐 𝒙=𝟒

KNOW

….

𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖- 4 - 4

−𝟐 𝒙=𝟒What times -2 gives us 4?

Or, if we can’t do this easily, we could divide both sides by -2

−𝟐 𝒙=𝟒- 2 - 2

𝒙=−𝟐

𝟐 .𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖−𝟔 𝒙Now, you COULD use trial and error and guess what the answer

would be. That will work but after awhile it gets time consuming.

GOLDEN RULE of EQUATION SOLVING # 1 : What you do mathematically to one side you must do to the other! (This

keeps both sides of the equations balanced.)

We can move ANY term!!! Just pick one to get started.

𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖- 4 - 4

−𝟐 𝒙=𝟒

I PICK 6x. So I add a 6x to both sides. (notice I ADDED a 6x because the 6x in the equation is – 6x and if I add a + 6x to

a -6x I’ll get ZERO!!)

Your Turn……………….

1. 4 + 3x = -122. 3. 4x – 2 = 7 – 5x4. 3x + 6 = 9 - x

Take out your notebook, and complete these 4 questions. Check answers. If correct. Move on. If not, compare your work with mine.

1. -5.33 2. 15 3. 1 4. 0.75

1. 4 + 3x = -12-4 -4

3x = = 16

Watch for signs!!!

3 3x = 5.333

2. 5 - x = -10-5 -5

-x = = -15-1 -1x = 15

3. 4x - 2 = 7 – 5x-5x -5x-x -2 = 7

Watch for signs!!!

3x = 5.333

2. 5 - x = -10-5 -5

-x = = -15-1 -1x = 15

𝟑 .𝟒−𝟐 𝒙=𝟖−𝟔 𝒙Now, you COULD use trial and error and guess what the answer
