! Please silence cellular phones and other mobile devices while in the Sanctuary.

Welcome to Shadyside Presbyterian ChurchWe are grateful for your presence and invite you to participate in the worship,

study, fellowship, and service of this congregation.

If you are a guest with us this morning, our ushers are available to assist you. Following worship, we invite those who are new to the church to join us under the ficus tree in the Sharp Atrium, where New Member Committee representatives will greet you and answer any questions you may have.

Nursery care is available for infants through three-year-olds during worship. Pagers are available. A cry room with an audio broadcast of worship is available downstairs in the Marks Room.

Children in Worship – At 11:00 a.m., families with two- and three-year-olds are welcome to report directly to the Nursery. Four-year-olds through second-graders attend worship and may exit with their teachers before the sermon to participate in children’s chapel worship and Christian education. (If you are a first-time guest, please accompany your child to the Chapel, and then you may return to the Sanctuary.) Parents should meet their children in the Christian education classrooms after worship. On the first Sunday of the month, first- and second-graders stay in worship through the entire service for Communion. A bulletin insert designed for children is available in the Narthex.

A video broadcast of worship is available in the Craig Room, accessible through the Narthex at the back of the Sanctuary.

Flower Ministry – After worship, members of the Board of Deacons’ Flower Ministry divide the chancel flowers into bouquets to be distributed to individuals who are celebrating joyous occasions and to those who could use some cheer. If you would like to deliver a bouquet to someone you know, please stop by the front of the Sanctuary after worship to receive one. Help us to share God’s love through flowers.

Prayer Request Cards – You are invited to write on a Prayer Request Card the names of those who are sick or in need of intercessory prayer.

Enlarged bulletins and individual listening devices for improved sound are available in the Narthex at the back of the Sanctuary. Please see an usher for assistance.

Fifth Avenue Parking – Parking on the inbound side of the block from Wilkins Avenue to Amberson Avenue is not available on Sunday mornings. Parking is available on the outbound side as well as both sides of Fifth Avenue from Amberson Avenue into Oakland. We appreciate your helpfulness utilizing these available parking areas on Sunday mornings.

Time of Fellowship immediately follows worship. Please join us after the service for light refreshments and an opportunity to greet each other.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

PRAyER oF CoNFEssIoN (spoken in unison) O God, You taught us to pray, “Forgive our sins as we forgive others.” Grant us the grace to live these words today, so that Your pardon may reach and bless the unforgiving heart that broods upon deep wrongs, or does not let old bitterness depart. May we look to Your cross to see the depth of Your truth. How great a debt we owe You! You have taken upon Yourself our sin, and have bound us to You with the bonds of love. Forgive us, we pray. Free us and make us grateful, so that our lives may spread Your peace, in Jesus Christ.

Order of WorshipThe service of worship begins with the music of the prelude.

Through its power and brilliance, may you feel the majesty and glory of God; in its quietness, His peace.

ANThEMAnd I Saw a New Heaven Edgar Bainton

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and first earth had passed away, and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband; and I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying: “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people; and God Himself shall be with them and be their God; and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain, for the former things are passed away.”

East End Cooperative Ministry Food Pantry Collection – Please return your filled bags today. The Hunger and Homelessness Mission Action Community (MAC) appreciates your donation to our mission partner.

The annual meetings of the corporation and congregation of shadyside Presbyterian Church will be held today, May 19, in the Sanctuary immediately following worship. Members are asked to remain so that we can accomplish the election of officers and handle other important business, including the election of a Pastor Nominating Committee. Extended childcare will be available for the duration of the meeting.

Presentation, dinner, and discussion – On Wednesday, May 22, Lauren Bairnsfather, Executive Director of the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh, will join us to share a presentation on the history of Jewish immigration to the United States, while also touching on the topic of antisemitism. In addition, we have invited the New Light Congregation of the Tree of Life Synagogue to join us for the presentation, which will be followed by a dinner discussion. Lauren will conclude her presentation by providing questions for table discussions, which will enable members of Shadyside Presbyterian Church to interact and build relationships with members of New Light. The dinner will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall and will conclude by 7:30 p.m. Please sign up in the Sharp Atrium or contact the church office.

Wealth Gap learning simulation – In partnership with Open Hand Ministries, Shadyside Presbyterian Church will host a Racial Wealth Gap Learning Simulation on Wednesday, May 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Hulme Room. The purpose of the event is to help participants understand the connection among poverty, wealth, racial equity, and federal policy. Participants will explore thirteen United States federal policies that created and perpetuated structural and institutional inequity. We hope to bring awareness to the social impact of these policies, which continue to affect education, hunger, income, and property ownership. With this awareness and understanding, we can support policies and actions that undo and/or reduce wealth disparities. Dinner will be served during the event; a freewill offering will be received to offset the costs of the meal. Please RSVP by signing up in the Sharp Atrium or calling the church office.

Children’s Ministry Invitation – The Children’s Ministry has enjoyed such a wonderful program year, culminating with the recent Easter Egg Hunt. You are invited to attend an informational planning meeting on Sunday, June 2, at 9:45 a.m., when we will share what we have been doing to support families and children, and discuss ideas for the future. We welcome your suggestions and support! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Elder Vicki Potter through the church office.

strawberry Festival – Sponsored by the Board of Deacons, the 26th Annual Strawberry Festival occurs on Friday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. and benefits Sojourner House, one of our mission partners. This community event offers fun, food, and entertainment for all. We are seeking volunteers to help staff the event as well as donations for the bake sale. Please sign up for these opportunities in the Sharp Atrium.

Calling All Bakers – Our annual birthday cake celebration is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, in the Parish Hall following worship. We need a minimum of two dozen cakes. Bake your favorite recipe or try a new one — a variety of cakes makes for a great event. Please sign up in the Sharp Atrium or call the church office to let us know what kind of cake you will bring and which month of the year you would prefer to honor.
