Welcome to our new magazine
which aims to bring our read-
ers information of what’s on at
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Centre during 2013.
We aim to publish this
brochure on a quarterly basis,
so we hope you enjoy this, our
first issue.
So, let me start by wishing you
a Happy New Year. To you and
your family and friends, may I
wish you a happy, healthy and
prosperous 2013.
And, as we begin this new
year, we, at The Centre have
just completed our first year of
operations at Palmerston
Place.
It has been a challenging but
successful first year. As well
as offering a range of Work-
shops and demonstrations
from some of the country’s top
mediums; we also offered a
selection of conducive classes
to benefit the mind, body and
spirit. These have included a
range of Yoga classes, Tai Chi,
Meditation Classes, Baby
Massage, Mother & Baby
Yoga, and a number of thera-
pies from private therapists.
As well as this, we provide
space for artists and have their
work on display. We have also
hosted Art Exhibitions in The
Centre.
In March we were delighted to
welcome our delegates from
Switzerland to The Centre.
They enjoyed a Work-
shop by Simon
James, Brian Robert-
son and Janet
Parker, and were
delighted to be able
to visit Roslin Chapel
and to see the sea,
whilst they were
here.
We’ve held a number
of social evenings
which culminated in
our 1st Anniversary Concert in
October when we had on loan,
the famous Arthur Conan
Doyle Violins and had a spe-
cial piece of music composed
to commemorate the event.
In true X-Factor tradition, we’ve
also discovered our own Palm-
erston Proclaimer, Fraser Blair
who has been entertaining us
with his crooning!
We’ve set up our own Investi-
gative Unit, headed up by
Archie Lawrie, who gives
monthly lectures on Psychic
Phenomena; and we hosted
The Annual Conference of The
Scottish Society for Psychic
Research.
We opened our Victorian Tea-
room to provide a welcome
cuppa to all our visitors and in
November, we enjoyed a
special church service which
twinned our Church with the
Open Door Spiritualist
Sanctuary in Victoria, Canada.
Throughout the year we’ve had
a number of Open Days,
Coffee Mornings and fund-
raisers. So, now, as we enter
into 2013, we start all over
again—hence, our Back to The
Future, heading!
But, watch this space as we
aim to continue to develop and
enhance the product offering
from The Centre. We already
have many exciting new events
planned for 2013 - some are
listed below and throughout
this brochure. So, make sure
to pick up your copy of ‘What’s
On’ for all the details.

Why are we here?
At this time of year, it is often a
question that is asked, it’s a
time of new beginnings, new
year resolutions and a time of
appraisal and reflection. As
Spiritualists believe that we’re
all here for a purpose. Some-
times that purpose is not
always clear to us, but through
time it will be revealed, but in
the main, we believe in
personal responsibility and
support for our fellow man.
So I thought it an opportune
time to explain a little about
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Centre, - and why it’s here!
We are a Spiritual Centre, and
as well as providing a beautiful
Sanctuary for our Spiritualist
Church, we aim to provide
facilities for the physical,
mental, emotional and
spiritual well-being of Society.
We want to be a resource for
the whole community—and we
welcome people of all
religions, and none, to come
and enjoy our magnificent
building, and perhaps partake
of some of the activities. And
indeed, we also have rooms
available for private hire.
As such, we have activities in
the building that are conducive
to our aims, and this brochure
brings you information on just
some of them.
If you haven’t yet visited us,
pop in and see what’s going
on, have a coffee and cake,
book a massage or other
holistic therapy, come to some
of our classes or lectures, but
above all, come and see us,
we welcome you to our
Centre—we hope to see you
soon at 25 Palmerston Place,
or visit our website at:

The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Centre is delighted to
announce the appointment of
Terry Johns as Artistic Adviser
to The Centre.
Terry Johns has enjoyed a
distinguished career as a
member of the Royal Philhar-
monic Orchestra, and the
London Symphony Orchestra.
A composer of music for
studio, television, instrumental
groups and brass bands. He
formed an early passion and
flair for jazz that was to
influence many of his own
compositions. In the early
years he played with many of
the “greats”of the day -The
Tubby Hayes Freddie Logan
Afro Cuban big band, the
Kenny Wheeler octet and
bands led by Graham Collier
and John Dankworth.
He is renowned as one of the
world's finest French Horn
players and played on the
sound tracks for the films
“Star Wars”, “The Empire
strikes Back” and “Superman”
and with television appear-
ances on Andre Previn’s music
night, with jazz through the
B.B.C.’s “Jazz in Britain” broad-
casts, and by special request
to the Royal Ballet at Covent
garden.
His own composing continued
when he wrote the theme and
incidental music for Harlech
TV’s The Pretenders. He also
played for many opera
recordings with Richard
Bonynge, Joan Sutherland and
Luciano Pavarotti and film
sound tracks by Jerry Gold-
smith, Jerry Fielding, Elmer
Bernstein Lalo Schifrin and
Henry Mancini; and on many
pop records with Paul Simon,
Paul McCartney, Chicago and
Gilbert O’Sullivan and toured
Britain with Barry White and
his “Love Unlimited” Orchestra
and for “Peggy Lee Entertains”
for London Weekend T.V.
Terry now lives with his wife
Karin in Edinburgh, where he
appears regularly with the
RSNO, Scottish Ballet and the
BBC Scottish Symphony
orchestra. He recently
composed a piece of music to
commemorate the first
anniversary of the opening of
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Centre, and arranged for his
piece to be played on the
famous Conan Doyle Quartet
of instruments. These instru-
ments were crafted from the
tree that grew in Conan
Doyle’s garden, when he lived
in Edinburgh, by Scottish Violin
Maker, Steve Burnett.
“Following the success of this
concert, we are delighted that
Terry has accepted the
position of Artistic Advisor at
The Centre. The Arthur Conan
Doyle Centre was formed to
provide for the physical,
mental emotional and spiritual
welfare of the
community
and as such,
one of our
aims is to
re-introduce
music into
the building.
We already
provide space
for the
creative arts
but we are
extremely
grateful to
Terry Johns
for bringing
all the
elements
together so
that the Anniversary Concert
could take place and for
composing this special piece
of music to commemorate our
first anniversary at 25
Palmerston Place. We look
forward with eager anticipation
to his next selection of music
and concerts which comple-
ment our beautiful building so
well, in Edinburgh’s West End.
As part of that process, The
Musical Tribute to Robert
Burns (detailed below) is the
first in a season of musical
events for 2013, that Terry has
planned for us.
Thank you, Terry.”

A Letter to a Friend Terry Johns
The letter below is reproduced with the kind permission of Terry Johns, who penned this to his friend, Pat, an Irish violinist whom he
was in an orchestra with, a number of years ago. Pat retired from the orchestra and works in a violin sale room in Dublin.
Dear Pat,
I write to you, while imagining that Dublin courtyard, filled with the aroma of cedarwood, warm walnut oil, and the sound of violins, and to tell you that, at last I
can claim a violin experience of my own!
I composed my first string quartet for Alastair Savage’s group at the request of the Conan Doyle Centre in Edinburgh for their first anniversary. When I hear
people perform my music like this, it always brings such a rich mixture of feelings. I feel a great and unfamiliar humility when players take such pains to achieve a
genuine reproduction, which is strange terminology but may be as near the truth as it is possible to get with regard to written music.
The two violins, viola and cello that Alastair and the quartet played on Tuesday were made here in Edinburgh by Steve Burnett, from an old sycamore that stood
in the garden of Conan Doyle’s childhood home on the outskirts of the city.
Searching through the Sherlock Holmes stories I thought the “ Sign of the Four” would be an appropriate one for a quartet and I set to work. Finally, the
piece arranged itself into a reading of a synopsis of the story with incidental music.
I read from the book, as the audience enjoyed the brilliant playing and the atmospheric language of Conan Doyle, on a dark, late autumn evening in an elegant
Georgian drawing room overlooking the cathedral grounds.
Thirty-five people make a perfect audience for Chamber music, and Steve’s instruments, having lain asleep in the workshop for more than a year, filled the room
with their song: a glorious gratitude to their craftsman and the quartet, and for the joy of having an audience. Afterwards I felt a warm satisfaction inside, redolent
of my early days performing. No critics were there, no conductor or agent. No fee or potential recording contract. Only applause and smiling faces.
“As it was in the beginning”
After the concert, as I walked to the car, a fox loped across the broad elegant expanse of Melville Street with a grace and urbanity that matched her surroundings,
as if she had been born in the city. I stood watching her, surveying the silent Georgian streetscape, and felt suddenly harassed by a memory of the summer from
that very spot, when an open topped car, growling impatiently in the festival traffic spewed out noxious petrol fumes and the voltage and vitriol of electric guitars,
carrying the insult of their “sound” around the city, like a violent mental patient on day-release.
“These planks of wood impaled with their diabolical devices and variations of torture and torment, contemn patience, dedication, craftsmanship and fineness of feeling,
and glorify vulgarity, deadly voltage and sexual distortion. The hellish sound of this ‘instrument’ disturbs the Almighty Himself, and the evidence of His discomfort
surrounds us!”
That is what you wrote in your letter to me after one of your reluctant Dublin rock and roll ‘experiences’, and I agree entirely, though I could never summon such
faith or effective language to use as a vehicle for my own feelings.
The concert and the relief and sanity that it brought, having rearranged and restored my molecules, follicles and corpuscles to “factory settings”, I sat down to write
this morning, reflecting on our forty years of friendship, our many exchanges about music, and of you, across the sea in Dublin among melomanic Irishmen
and centuries of craftsmanship.
“The flames of hell give forth no light” it has been said! Nor does an electric shock generate music any more than it gave relief from their torments to the mental
patients of old.
To call this painful noise “music”, and the as the media now does, is an obfuscation that will be penetrated in time.
I fear that in our urban lives, we are being steered by increasingly excessive and almost inescapable noise towards some sort of collective neurological malfunction,
the early stages of which is at present masquerading as euphoria.
Did Mary Shelley herself not describe her chimera as “handsome” and ‘beautiful” and did not the creators of the gleaming war machine swell with pride in 1914.
Please forgive my self-indulgence. I seem to have found a little revolutionary spirit under some old delusions and complacency. Only thoughts of you and old
Ireland bring me comfort and peace.
After Christmas we’ll come visiting and shopping and we shall buy some Donegal tweed, against the winter blast, and Waterford crystal, to bring gentle music to
the dinner table.
When midnight mass is over and the children are asleep there will be silence in Melville street so we can listen to the trees grow and the fox’s velvet footfall.
Yours Ever
Terry

Noah's Ark Society and the Scole Group are all included in this presentation; which will conclude with a
major recent shift in his view of the importance of such physical phenomena.
Nick Kyle is the President of the SSPR and has previously presented talks to the Society on 'Spiritualism: a
Timeline of Curiosities' and 'The Paranormal World of Robert Burns'. Nick, who is known to many in psychical
research as an affable host, promises to share his own experiences with generous measures of critical
thinking and warm reflection.

Nigel Peace is an author, I Ching consultant, artist and Reiki teacher. He is the author of 51GN5 0F L1F3, a
comedy novel of sabotage in the afterlife, and of 5P1R1T R3V3L4T10N5, a description of prophetic dreams
and synchronicities.
This book was second in The People's Book Prize national awards.
This is Nigel's first talk to the SSPR/ESPR/SACDC and we look forward to hearing his thoughts on
Precognition, Dreams and Synchronicity—all too often ignored as a serious area for research and investiga-
tion. Having worked as an engineer and Mathematics Teacher, Nigel is now an award-winning author, his
work endorsed by world-renowned scientist Rupert Sheldrake as “vivid and fascinating—pioneering re-
search”. Nigel Peace, Author.
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Centre has it’s own Psychical Research & Investigation Unit which is headed up
by Archie Lawrie; who, as well as being an accomplished author of a number of books on the subject, is also
Vice President of the SSPR (above).
As well as carrying out investigations into the paranormal, Archie conducts his own monthly lecture pro-
gramme at The Centre and welcomes the guest speakers above to join us at The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Centre to add to the discussion and debate on topics relating to the paranormal. Thank you, Archie.
If you are experiencing strange happenings, or are disturbed by things that go bump in the night—then give
us a call. Archie will be pleased to speak to you, and investigate, where appropriate.
