As the congregation prays for the Calling of new pastors, it’s helpful to share our faith stories, both individual stories and our stories as members of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Here are some of my memories as I reflect upon my own spiritual journey in what I would call my formative years through High School. Born in March 1947, in Alexandria, VA., my parents attended Faith Lutheran in Arlington. My baptism in Sept. took place in my dad’s hometown of Ripon WI at a Reformed Church. My parents took my brother and I to church every Sunday, never missing worship even when we were on vacation. My earliest memories of FLC include Sunday School, Christmas Pageants, and tagging along with my mom to Circle Meetings, and with my dad to Church Softball and Bowling Leagues. Pastor Carl Mengering was the pastor I remember. One story sticks out in my mind from Sunday School when I was about 4 or 5. Mrs. Olaf was a SS teacher who received her 50 – year perfect attendance pin. She was beloved and was loved by all of us. She gave us big hugs. I learned from an early age, church life was important. Going to church and participating in fellowship events was fun. We also went to LHC Camp over Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend at Prince William Forrest Camp. This was a long weekend family camp and nurtured my love for the outdoors and singing around a campfire. In 1953 we moved to Annandale VA and attended Holy Trinity Lutheran in Falls Church. In 1957, our family became charter members of Hope Lutheran in Annandale where I was confirmed. In my Junior year, attending a Lutheran Youth Leadership event at Muhlenberg College in PA, I made a decision to go into the ministry. While in HS I served as President of the Potomac Area Luther League (DC, VA & MD Churches) and VP of the Eastern District LL (Maine to FL). In my Senior year, I decided to go to Concordia College in Moorhead MN as a PreSem student. Being nurtured in the church, growing in faith through confirmation, and becoming a youth leader, were shaping moments in my faith journey. Getting to know, share, and experience Christ-Centered events was fun, inspirational and life shaping as I ventured into the Call to serve Christ in some kind of ministry. P ony Express mail will be moving through the Our Savior congregation. Twenty-six route bags will leave the church on Sunday, October 17. In true Pony Express manner, each saddlebag will need to move along the route quickly. We are urging each household to pass along the bag and relay this important church mail within 24 hours after receiving it. If you are unable to receive the saddlebag as it progresses along your route, an effort will be made to reach you through the postal service. Many households are scattered through wide areas that we were unable to include in a saddlebag route, and they will be contacted through the mail system. As the Pony Express moves through your area, consider what God has blessed you with and how you can share these blessings through financial giving or personal giving of your time and talents. We are all part of this Pony Express team. Thank you for your dedication in completing each route and delivering the stewardship message.

T his is the 18th year of our Pies-4-You Fundraiser that so many Our Savior members can be very proud of. We invite everyone to help with some part of this fundraiser, whether you have cut rhubarb for us this summer, are peeling and slicing apples now, or can come in November and help us make the crust, assemble and package the pies, we have a job for everyone! Mark your calendars! We will make crust on Saturday, November 6 and pies on Thursday, November 11 and Saturday, November 13.

Orders for pies can be placed now! Charity Circle, Caring Cooks and the church office will be taking those orders until Monday, November 1. You can fill out the order form enclosed (there is one for you and one for a friend!) and return it, along

with payment, to any Caring Cook or Charity Circle member or to the Church office. Order forms are also available at the church. Pies are $10 each. We will be making Apple, Peach, Cherry and Rhubarb pies.

The State WELCA board has set a tentative date for the Winter Retreat.

It will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Grand Island, NE on January 15, 2022. Make this the first event on your calendar for 2022!

No date has been set yet for the Spring Gathering. It will be held here at Our Savior. The theme is “Gather Gladly for Strength” taken from the theme Bible verse of Philippians 4:12-13 NLT. It reads: “I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” When the date becomes available, I hope you will set aside the date to attend.

The State convention will be held October 1 – 3, 2021 at Camp Carol Joy Holling in Ashland. Dorothy Wert is our delegate.

Members of Joy Circle are encouraged to attend the Pink Flamingo event as that will be our meeting for October. Pink Flamingo Nite is planned for Thursday, October 7.

Our November Joy Circle meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 10. Phyllis Rahn will be the leader with a remembrance of our members who are now part of the Church eternal. You are welcome to attend – we meet at 2pm in the social room. Charity circle will be busy with pies in November. The crust will be made on Saturday, November 6 and the pies made on Thursday, November 11 and Saturday, November 13. We extend an invitation for you to join us for one or all of the days.

All women of Our Savior are welcome to attend any circle meeting. Come join us.

Continue to stay safe and smile every day.
