VisioningwiththeCommunityBasedParticipatoryResearch(CBPR)ModelFacilitatorGuideandWorkbookUsingCBPRModelforPlanningandEvaluation

ofCommunity-EngagedPartnerships ThisVisioningExerciseusestheCBPRModelasastorylineorlogicmodeltoshowtheconnections

betweenyourpartneringandcommunityengagementpractices,andyourgoalstobetterservecommunitiesandimproveinequitiesinhealth,education,andcommunitydevelopment.TheVisioningactivityfacilitatesuseoftheModel,notasastaticframework,butasadynamicguidetoadapt,brainstormideas,andco-createanewversionoftheModelthatworksbestforyourpartnership.Althoughitwascreatedasaresearchmodel,feelfreetoreflectonthefourfollowingdomainsforprogramplanningandevaluation,communityinitiativesandothereffortsdirectedatsocialchange.

Therearefourdomainsofthemodel:1. Contextsarethesocial,cultural,economic,political,andotherfactorsthatgroundpartnershipsin

local,state,ornationalconditions.2. PartnershipProcessesarepracticesforsuccessfulpartnering.Theseinclude:individualcharacteristics

(skills&attitudesacademic-communitypartnersbringtothepartnership);relationships(howpartnersmakedecisions,andinteractwitheachothertoachievegoals);andstructuralfeatures(whoarethestakeholdersandwhataretheiragreements,values,andguidelinesforpartnering).

3. Intervention/ResearchDesignsarethenshapedbythenatureofpartneringandtheextentofequalcontributionofknowledgefromdifferentpartners,includingcommunitymembers,clinicians,healthprofessionals,government,andacademicmembers.Thisdomainincludesbothprocessesandoutputs.

4. Outcomesincludearangeofintermediatesystemandcapacitychanges,i.e.,newpolicyenvironments,sustainabilityofprojectandpartnership,sharedpowerrelationsinresearch,andincreasedcapacities;aswellaslong-termoutcomesofcommunityandsocialtransformation,healthandhealthequity.

ACTIVITY:UsingtheCBPRModelasaPlanningTooThankyousomuchforparticipatingintheVisioningsession.Thepurposeistolearnfromeveryone’sperspectivesothatwecanidentifythemostimportantissuesforourpartnership.WewillstartwithlookingataModelofCBPRpartnering,andgostepbystepthrougheachDomain.AswegothroughtheModel,wewillreflectonwhichissuesaremostimportanttous,i.e.,whatismostimportantaboutourcontext,ourcurrentengagementorpartneringpractices,andwhatoutcomeswewouldliketoachieve.

Wefirstwillstartwithidentifyingourpriorityissue,andthengototheoutcomes,orendpointswe’dliketosee.Thenwe’llreturntocontext.Startwiththepriorityissue.OUTCOMES:Withyourpartners,envisiontheoutcomesyou’dliketoseeasaresultofyourpartnership.Reviewthetwocategoriesofoutcomesandthelistbelowinthecoloredbox:
