Rabbis Message
A Request. This is a repeat of a request that I made to you in one of my blasts this past July. I hopethat you will share some of your thoughts with me, even if they go no further. Pleaseread on.
This year I would like to try something new, and I hope that you will try it with me. Someof you know that I like to tell stories. So now I am going to ask you to tell me some stories- your stories. I am asking you to tell me the story of an experience you have had, at some
point in your life, that was, for you, life-altering. It can be a wonderful, joyous experience,or a more challenging one.
I will not qualify it any further than that, so that your mind can go wherever it takes you.And then, if you can, I'd like to ask if there was anything you can say that you learned from it, and if so, whatthat was. It can be a story, or a few sentences, or a few paragraphs, or whatever you like.
What will I do with what you tell me? Nothing, if that is your preference. On the other hand, what I would
like to do, with your permission only, is to put your responses together into a little booklet to distribute onYom Kippur. I can either attach your names or leave them out, or not publish them at all. If it is your prefer-ence that no one see your responses but me, they will go no further than my eyes. This I promise you, accord-ing to the confidentiality to which I am bound as a rabbi.
Please send it to me at rabbigoodman@uniontemple.org, or in a handwritten note addressed to me at the tem- ple: Rabbi Goodman, Union Temple, 17 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Or, please feel free to callme personally in my office before Rosh Hashanah or before Yom Kippur. 718-638-7600, Ext 2.
I believe this can be a valuable exercise for us, as we anticipate the New Year, and one that will help us in the process of introspection, in which our tradition calls us to engage during this period.
And of course, from Stephen, Philip and myself, I wish you joy, sweetness, and hope, in this New Year.
- Lshanah tovah tikateivu vteichateimu -
May you be inscribed and sealed for blessing in the Book of Life.
-Rabbi Linda Henry Goodman

Shabbat Morning HevreTorah Study for AdultsSaturday Mornings, 9:00-10:20
Beginning September 21
This years focus:SEFER DEVARIM - The Book of Deuteronomy
Because of the calendar cycle, the reading of the Book of Deu-teronomy generally occurs during the summer when, quite hon-estly, many of us are away. This is our opportunity to look atDeuteronomy in depth. In certain ways, it is a revolutionarybook in relation to the four other books of the Torah. Comestudy with us on Saturday mornings and together well discover
why.

Bruchot Habaot Welcome!
We are delighted to welcome two wonderful new members of our senior staff. We know thatthey will be warmly embraced by our congregational family, and we hope that they will findgreat meaning and fulfillment in their work with us.
Student Cantor Emma GoldinWe at Union Temple have been blessed by some of the finest professionals inthe American Cantorate. We are so excited to welcome Student Cantor EmmaGoldin into our midst this year. She grew up at Congregation B'nai Tikvah inthe San Francisco Bay Area. She began performing in musicals at age four andwas very involved in her synagogue choir. While attending the University ofCalifornia, Davis, Emma led weekly Shabbat services at Hillel and also workedas a cantorial soloist at Congregation Bet Haverim. Twice she received the Don
Kunitz Jewish Studies award for her undergraduate research. After spendingtwo years post-college working as an actress, cantorial soloist, and Hebrewschool teacher and spending time in Israel as a volunteer for the IDF, Emma
decided to follow her dream of becoming a cantor. Emma is currently a third year at the Deb-bie Friedman School of Sacred Music at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religionand is thrilled to be joining the community at Union Temple. She has a beautiful voice, and weare thrilled to have her with us.
Mindy Sherry, Director of Youth and Family EngagementAs you know, we made the decision this year to engage a full-time profes-sional in the field of Jewish Education. After a careful search by variousmembers our Religious School, Preschool, and Youth Group Committees, inaddition to the Rabbi and Bea, we are delighted to welcome Mindy Sherryinto the position of Director of Youth and Family Engagement. A native ofMiami, FL, Mindy holds a Masters Degree in Jewish Education and a Mas-ters Degree in Jewish Nonprofit Management from the Rhea Hirsch Schoolof Education of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in LosAngeles. With an undergraduate degree in Social Work, Mindy worked at Temple Judea in
Coral Gables, Florida for over nine years before returning to school for her graduate degrees. In her personal statement Mindy writes, My experiences in developing a passion for JewishEducation taught me that children learn by doing. Children appreciate the Jewish experience ifthey actively participate in it. Jewish educators facilitate learning by providing students withopportunities for involvement in hands-on learning activities, and by mentoring them to appre-ciate the values of Judaism they are learning by doing. As children become adults in the Jew-ish community, they remember these experiences and stay connected with Judaism and Jewishcauses. Welcome Mindy!

Happy New Year, and a big Thank You to those who volunteered to serve as ushers for theHigh Holy Day services.
Our favorite fun activity, assembling the sukkah , will take place on Sunday morning, Sep-tember 15th, at 10 AM. Its always a great way to start the Brotherhood year. And wellhave coffee and bagels, of course.
July marked the 150 th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, and brought renewed interestin the Civil War this year. On Sunday morning, October 27th, at 10 AM, I will lead a book discussion about Jews and the Civil War , edited by Jonathan Sarna (Brandeis University)and Adam Mendelsohn (College of Charleston). It is a collection of essays about the role of Jews in the Civil War and the wars impact on American Jews, both at the time and longafterward. It includes discussions of the battlefront (where about 8,000 Jews served, count-
ing both sides), the home front, slavery and abolition, rabbis in wartime and other topics. Whether you haveread the book or not, I am sure youll enjoy the discussion. And if you do read it, youll learn a great dealabout our history as American Jews, from many perspectives. And again, well have bagels and coffee, too!
