CAPABILITIES
UNIDO-ICHETis an autonomous technological institution
within the auspices of UNIDO, located in Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul – bridge between Europe and Asia (West and East)Turkey – bridge between industrialised and developing countries
UNIDO-ICHET– bridge between fossil fuel past and hydrogen future
UNIDO-ICHET is located in Istanbul, TurkeyFormed in 2003 – trust fund agreement betweenUNIDO and Turkish Government (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources) Started operation in 2004Budget $40M over 5 yearsCurrently, staff of about 20
UNIDO-ICHET Background
UNIDO-ICHET Organisation
UNIDO-ICHET Mission
The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies is a UNIDO project with the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries. By stimulating appropriate applications, ICHET will thus act as a bridge to help span the gaps that exist between the developed and developing countries in the areas of both hydrogen research and development efforts, and energy supply and demand.
Main strategy of ICHET
Promote Hydrogen Energy Activities at National and International Platforms by:• Raising funding for hydrogen energy projects;• Searching and identifying committed project partners;
• Financing projects with industrial partners;• Establishing applied R & D facilities addressing the bottlenecks of hydrogen in developing world;
• Calling for proposals and setting project goals;• Organising meetings;• Training and educating people at various levels;• Conducting applied R&D;• Disseminating information through publications and web site.

NATIONAL PROJECTSNATIONAL PROJECTS
ICHET staff have been active in canvassing representatives of Turkish industry at conferences, seminars and meetings.
- a number of Turkish companies have been attracted by the benefits to be gained by exploiting hydrogen energy.
- a number have joined together with ICHET and formed consortia to undertake the necessary development work.
These projects can be considered in two groups:
1) project funding has been sought by ICHET from external organisations such as UNDP, TUBITAK, etc;
2) projects will be funded by the consortia members with partial funding by ICHET.

EXTERNALLY FUNDED ACTIVITIES EXTERNALLY FUNDED ACTIVITIES -- IIIIIIKocaeli Municipality Bus
SUMMARY: This project aims to develop and operate 2 buses that use hydrogen as fuel for transportation in Izmit area. The buses will use specially adapted internal combustion engines.
Consortium Partners: UNIDO-ICHET, Izmit Municipality, TEMSA Bus Co., BOS
ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET -- IISea Taxi
Consortium Partners: ICHET, LabrandaMarine and Composite Materials Manufacture and Trade, Okted A.Ş., BOS, Technology Holding. Engines &H2
Storage
SUMMARY: two internal combustion engines running on hydrogen and having a power of 245 HP will be integrated into the sea taxis. In the next stages of the project, PV panels will be fitted on top of the sea taxi through which electricity will be produced. Hydrogen will be produced via an electrolyser.

ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET -- IIIIFuel Cell Powered Forklift
Consortium Partners: ICHET, Çukurova Holding, BOS A.S.
SUMMARY: to realise the utilisation of fuel cells of 5 kW powerin forklifts. A prototype will be developed around an appropriatefuel cell. Hydrogen will be supplied by electrolysis of water.
Consortium Partners: ICHET, Bogazici Univ. Shell, Linde Gas, 3M, .
ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET ACTIVITIES PARTIALLY FUNDED BY ICHET -- IIIIIIHydrogen Fuelled Small Vehicles
Summary: The project is an implementation project for designing two vehicles. One is powered by fuel cell-battery hybrid power train and the other is a race car. They will be the first urban type hydrogen powered cars in Turkey. In the first stage of the project, a single seater hydrogen fuelled car will bedesigned having a 1.2 kW fuel cell. In the second stage two seater hybrid car having two 1.2 kW fuel cells working in series with the batteries will be designed for long range operation.

Why H2 in developing countries?
ICHET aims to support developing countries “leap-frog”over conventional energy technologies to hydrogenSupport the exploitation of indigenous & RES of energySupport local industry, help create local jobs“Hydrogen Match Makers”
• Over 70% of increasein world primary energydemand between2004-2030 comes fromdeveloping countries.
• By 2030, China andIndia will account for57% of world coaldemand, up from 43% in 2004.
Established an application and evaluation framework
