The Mid-Atlantic TransportationSustainabilityUniversityTransportationCenter(MATSUTC)iscoordinatingthissummer research internship program.Selected applicants will have theopportunity to work with a facultymemberorgraduatestudentononeortwoprojectsatoneofourconsortiumuniversities or VTRC, the VirginiaTransportation Research Council.Please see last year’s UVA End ofSummerSymposiumPage forexampleprojects spanning water resources,structures and transportation andtraffic.

Program Description

Programdates.May31-July29,2016

Students will have the opportunity ofpursuingresearch inanyoneofthesixuniversities within the MATS UTCconsortium: University of Delaware,Marshall University, Morgan StateUniversity, Old Dominion University,University of Virginia, and VirginiaTech;or at theVirginiaTransportationResearch Center (VTRC), VDOT’sresearcharmlocatedinCharlottesville.Each student will be paired with afacultyorgraduatestudentmentorandoneortwoprojects.

These projects are funded by variousstateandfederalentitiessuchasstateDOTs,USDOT,andNSF.Expectations.Studentsareexpectedtowork40hoursperweekforthe9-weekperiod. Students will participate in atleast one weekly meeting with theircohorts. Transportation tours andother activities will take placethroughout the program. UVAresearchers and VDOT internsworkingattheVirginiaTransportationResearchCouncilwillmeet together throughoutthe summer. During the final week ofthe program, students will create aposter, give an oral presentation ontheir research, and submit a finalreport.

Eligibility. Juniors or seniors areeligible if currently enrolled in anundergraduate program closelyrelated to transportation and willreceive degrees no earlier thanDecember 2016. Applicants mustdemonstrate a desire to pursuegraduate studies and/or a career intransportation and are required tohave excellent analytical andcommunication skills. Students fromdiverse backgrounds are encouragedtoapply.

Compensation.Studentswillreceivea$4000stipend.Studentscomingfromother universities will be providedwith housing. A limited number ofmeal stipends may be available forfederal-aideligiblestudents.
