MERKWAARDIGE VROU: NEEM SAAM MET KLEINDOGTER DEEL
Ouma n yster op baan
ESM ERASMUS
@erasmusesme
n
Leeftyd van swaarkry het n ysterou-
ma (85) vanDurbanville haar nie laat
onderkry nie sy laat haar selfs nog
op die atletiekbaan geld.
Aletta Ackermann van die OnzeMolen-af-
treeoord het voorverlede Saterdag saammet
haar kleindogter, ShanCarlsen (23), deelge-
neem in spiesgooi en diskusgooi by die WP-
atletiekkampioenskap by die Parow-atle-
tiekbaan.
dogter saam-saam in dieselfde baan in on-
sport.
Die naaste deelnemer aan my ouma was
65 jaar oud n hele 20 jaar jonger, vertel
sy.
Ystervrou is nie eers die regte beskry-
wing vir haar ou lyfie nie. Sy het inmoeilike
omstandighede haar enigste dogter grootge-
maak.Haarman, Philip, is al in 2000 oorlede.
ring.
Aletta het 55 jaar as sekretaresse gewerk
endoen steeds die boekevanhaar dogter, die
bekende Erna Ackermann van die gelykna-
mige dansskool.
Toe Aletta onlangs in Durbanville intrek,
aftree-oord.
Sy het op skool in Heidelberg (Wes-Kaap)
al aandie items indie SuidwestelikeDistrik-
te se kampioenskap deelgeneem. Sy het ook
in Junie 1997 aan die 12de wreld-veterane-
kampioenskap in Durban deelgeneem, waar
gaan.
deelneem.

VERVOLG VAN BLADSY 1
Dt wil gedoen wees!
Aletta het die linkerarm sowat twee jaar
gelede beseer enhet haarselfweer begin for-
regterbeen gehad.
weens n bloedklont in haar been.
goue medaljes verower!
Oums is my superhero, my beste vrien-
din en voorbeeld en alles waaroor enige
kleindogter kon droom!

Truck driver rescued: A man was injured two weeks ago (Wednesday 16 March) after
his truck overturned on the Vissershok Road outside Durbanville. On arrival, ER24 para
medics found a large truck lying on its side on the side of the road. The driver of the
truck was found in the cabin of the vehicle. Rescue services had to remove the window
to allow paramedics to gain access to the patient, says ER24 spokesperson Russel
Meiring. On assessment, paramedics found that he had sustained moderate injuries. He
was treated for his injuries and transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The patient later told paramedics that he had lost consciousness just before his vehicle
overturned. Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

erskeie klagtes van gebrek aan diens-
lewering by die Brackenfell-verkeers-
departement se bestuurslisensiekan-
tore is verlede week onder TygerBurger se
aandag gebring.
Volgens die klaers is die diens so swakdat
die toets vir leerlingbestuurders om hul li-
sensie te bekom, vir onbepaalde tye ver-
traag word.
As bestuursinstrukteur besoek ek ge-
wil bly.
Volgens hom staan hy daagliks ure in die
ellelange rye iets waaroor al die bestuur-
skole in Brackenfell, volgens hom, kla.
masjien daar buite werking is.
TygerBurger kon tot dusver nog nie die
inligting bevestig nie, maar met n besoek
aan die Durbanville-kantoor was daar baie
min mense in sig.
Ditwas egter ni die geval in die Bracken-
fell-kantoor nie. Met sowat 20 mense in die
touwas daar net eenuit die drie kassierven-
sters oop.
almal is beneuk! s hy.
Beide bestuursinstrukteurs met wie Ty-
gerBurgergeselshet, s die situasie is onuit-
houdbaar. S kan dit nie aangaan nie. Ons
woner by. Ek voel egter regtig jammer vir
die personeel. Hulle kan nie byhou met die
toevloei vanmense nie en is duidelik onder-
beman. TygerBurger wag op kommentaar
van die Stad Kaapstad.

Apiece of Cape Towns history has
gone up for sale this week as the
first public telescope placed on Ta-
ble Mountain in 1930 was listed on
www.gumtree.co.za.
The telescope was purchased in
1991 by UCT employee JulianMey-
er, a collector of telescopes, from
the chief technical officer for a
brass scrap price.
At the time, the telescope had
fallenout ofuseas its objective lens
was badly cracked and the prisms
were chipped.
However, this does not mean
that the telescope has lost any of its
historical value.
This is obviously a very, very
rare piece and would be an amaz-
ing restoration project or an ex-
tremely valuable collectable for
display. Some very important peo-
ple looked through this telescope
during the years it was on the
mountain, says Meyer.
The telescope was mounted for
public viewing next to the upper
cable station in 1930, just after the
opening of the cable car.
Some of the illustrious visitors
who may have peered through its
lenses include the Royal Family
during their 1947 South African
tour where they were greeted by
the then 77-year old Prime Minis-
ter, Jan Smuts.
Smuts not only hiked to the top
of the mountain to meet them, but
arrived back in town in time for a
joint sitting of the houses of parlia-
ment.
Meyer was able to confirm the
telescopes authenticity via the
South African Astronomical Ob-
servatory.
He also unearthed from online
archives a picture of it in its place
on the mountain.
A formerZeiss employeevisiting
Cape Town from the USA, was able
to provide the exact manufacture
date and sentMeyer theoriginal to-
ken used to test the timing mecha-
nism, which takes the place of the
coins that the public used to pay for
their spectacular view of the city
and the ocean.
After trying to get the telescope
refurbished by the now defunct SA
NavyOpticalWorkshop and by the
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway
Company as a possible public ex-
hibit,Meyer finally reluctantly put
the precious telescope up for sale.
I hopewhoeverbuys itwill have
better luck than I did in getting this
wonderful telescope back into
working condition.

T
hey are just children who like to climb
trees and play in the park, not unlike
their more privileged counterparts
who live in Stellenberg, where these Delft
children come to beg.
They refers to five minor children who
aremade to hitchhike into this affluent area
and go from door to door to beg.
When this happened on Saturday after-
noon, a social work student who is also di-
rector of an organisation that champions re-
sponsible giving, happened to see them and
engage with them about this dangerous and
unhealthy activity.
Lucinda Valentine, director of GiveWise,
approached the five as they went along
knocking on doors, trying for anything from
bread to small change.
These children have been spotted previ-
ously begging within the community of Stel-
lenberg and asked why they were begging.
They told me they were hungry and that
there was nothing to eat at home. The chil-
dren are from Delft, Valentine says.
Their names are Ostino (12), the cousin of
siblings Morisha (13) and Grashen (12), and
a secondpair of siblings,Nicole (13) andAsh-
wyn (10). [The childrens surnames arewith-
held.]
The latter pairs mom is 43 years old and
unemployed, they toldValentine. The grand-
mother of the first three looks after them,
and she is also unemployed. Both families
live off social grants, Valentine says.
Nicole mentioned that her mother does
not receive Sassa payments for all the chil-
dren she takes care of, due to reasons she
wasunsureof. This couldbe lackof birth cer-
tificates, and so forth. Nicole mentioned her
mother has not followed up on applications
for them either, for whatever reason, Val-
entine says.
The area they live in is very dangerous
and they were informing me of shootings
and holdups that happen close towhere they
live.
They hitchhiked to Stellenberg and
would need to hitchhike back, but only after
they could get at least a bread to take home,
Valentine says.
The entire conversation, she says, took
place in the car park of the Stellenberg Spar
and in the adjacent field, where two of the
boys were playing in a tree like any regular
child would do, Valentine says.
Hope never fails, and Valentine may have
something up her sleeve, she says.
There are not enough self-sustaining or-
ganisationsworkingwithinDelft. Delft is on
GiveWises priority list in thenext twoyears
to create an action team like we have in
Fisantekraal to get all prevention focused
organisations on the same page.
Valentinehopes to do this so all these orga-
nisations can focus collaboratively on
strengthening the community from within
byworking together and strengthening each
other, instead of starting new projects all
the time and organisations that close down
two to three years down the line, she says.
You can tell from the kids eyes and the
scars on their faces and general appearance
that life has not treated them well. But be-
yond all of it, they still called me Tannie
and were very open to chat to me, she says.
The families rent wendy houses on the
same backyard and it is about R250 a month
for rent. The electricity is shared and they
need to pay for that too, Valentine says.
I will need to arrange a task team to es-
cort me and some people into the area to go
chat to the granny and mom to see how bet-
ter we are able to assist them long term and
sustainably.
Valentine once again implored the public
not to give irresponsibly.
As I was talking to the kids in the car
park, a guy came up to the kids to give them
change in a bank bag. I politely asked him
to not give it to them. I said it in front of the
kids. That guy doesnt realise he is support-
ing child labour.
Janice Sparg agrees. She is the chairper-
son of the Western Cape Street Childrens
Forum.
Firstly, there is no one to regulate the
begging. Thepublicmust help. Take the chil-
dren to a police station straight away if
there is a child on the streets, we should do
something, she says.
The law says only a designated social
worker from a registered child protection
agency or a police officer may take a child
from where they are, but quite often the so-
cial workers are single women and scared
to move in the areas in which they are need-
ed which isunderstandable and thepolice
just do not respond.
We are busyworking on gaps and blocka-
ges in the procedure of taking kids off
streets. Lindelani Home in Stellenboschwas
determined as the standardised intake cen-
tre for street children, so social workers will
not have to struggle to place children. Also,
the children canbe removed from the streets
immediately, Sparg says.
Parents who are sending their children
to beg should be charged with child labour
and neglect. Parents are getting away with
not parenting properly. It is a vicious cycle
and their children are placed in dangerous
situations on the streets.

T
he animal bylaw in respect of bark-
ing dogs may be frowned upon by
many residents as nonsensical, but
theCity ofCapeTown is adamant this by-
law can and is still enforced in a very
practical sense.
TygerBurger regularly receives com-
plaints from readers lamenting over
their rowdy neighbourhood dogs, cou-
pled with the Citys inability to enforce
the by-law that regulates this.
Inmost cases it transpires that the nui-
sance dog, after being reported to Law
Enforcement, will be considerably quiet
when the officers arrive on the premises.
Thismakes it impossible for them to take
lawful action against the dog owner.
Such a case is subsequently closed, until
another is opened.
How do you prove this?
In terms of the above bylaw, no dog is
allowed to bark formore than threemin-
utes successively in half an hour, or six
minutes successively in an hour.
But how do you prove this?
As is the case in anyother legalmatter,
sufficient evidence is needed to prose-
cute such a case in the municipal courts.
In this instance, a complete barking
monitoring schedule as well as audio-
visualmaterial would be needed, accord-
ing toMaycomember for safety and secu-
rity, JP Smith.
Smith says just because many of the
complaints encountered cannot always
be corroborated by the investigating offi-
cials who have tomonitor the dogs at the
identified locations, it does not mean the
bylaw is not being contravened.
... Obviously the officers cannotmon-
itor the location on a 24-hour basis, he
says. Enforcement action will therefore
involve an initial compliance notice di-
recting the dog owner to remedy the situ-
ation. In the event of non-compliance
this will be followed, in most cases, by
the compilation of a docket containing
the complainants affidavit, which in-
cludes a barking monitoring schedule
and whatever audio-visual evidence is
available, so that the dog owner can be
summoned to court on the prosecutors
instruction, he says.
Smith, however, does not clarify how
this would be done in the absence of offi-
cers to constantly monitor the premises.
An officer may also opt to issue a writ-
ten notice for the owner to appear in
courtwith the option of paying an admis-
sion of guilt fine. In the meantime, and
particularly when the officer has also es-
tablished that there is indeed a contra-
vention in terms of the barking provi-
sion which the owner has not remedied
or where they have failed to ensure com-
pliance, the dogs may be impounded and
the matter dealt with in terms of the ani-
mal bylaw. This processwill run parallel
to the one of summons and prosecution.
Admission of guilt fine
However, according to a TygerBurger
source, the lack of manpower in the Law
Enforcement department in actual fact
does not afford officers the time needed
to be spent on compiling such dockets.
In extreme cases, says this source, an
admission of guilt fine would be issued
to a repeat offenders, who would then
pay it and be on their way, often leaving
the cause of the problem unresolved.
In other cases, dog owners do comply
to notices to try and find out why their
dogs bark, and take action, but often
work full days and simply have no con-
trol over their dogs barking habits dur-
ing the day, says the source.
The issue evidently posing several
challenges, TygerBurger asked Smith
whether it really made sense to utilise
their limited manpower on such cases
and whether the City have had any suc-
cessful court appearances in this regard.
No specific answer was forthcoming.
The City also did not respond as to
whether they are looking into other
more practical solutions, which might
see this bylaw amended.

ith her new charity organisation
called Amatum, a Bellville business-
woman is giving back to her commu-
nity.
Louisa Malan, the owner of Engen La Ro-
chelle Convenience Centre in Bellville, was
lauded by Engen Petroleum for her invest-
ment in the Klipheuwel community.
Her service station has also donated
R500 000 worth of food to the Durbanville
Childrens Home, which collects daily food
hampers.
Other food donations are made to Huis
Redelinghuys, an old age home in the Bell-
ville area, as well as Caring Angels.
Over the recent festive seasonLouisa and
a group of volunteers helped put together
around 400 drawstring care bags contain-
ing toys, treats, toiletries and oversized
blankets and were handed out to children
in Klipheuwel.
We also got the community involved
and asked them to donate clothing and
T-shirts, which we gave to the kids, says
Louisa.
She registered a new non-governmental
organisation named Amatum earlier this
year,which is theLatinword for beloved.
Initially the focus of the organisationwill
centre on children in the Klipheuwel com-
munity with future plans to extend the pro-
gramme to other areas.
I was so inspired by the gratitude and
sense of hope instilled in these kids that I
decided to start a formal organisation so
that I could take things a step further.
I didnt want to just donate; I wanted to
take action and make a real difference by
investing in the future journey of these
young childrens lives, she says.
The objective of Amatum is to educate
and help children dream big about their fu-
ture. To do this, Saturday skills sessions
are heldwhere kids from the area come and
spend a day learning about different job
possibilities.
We want to pass on entrepreneurial
skills and expose these kids to themany op-
portunities that are possible.
Recently we held a market day and we
shared sales and marketing skills. In the
coming months the firebrigade will come
and talk to the children about fire safety,
she says.
This all provides excitement among the
children. Seeing the excitement in their
eyes makes all the difference for Louisa,
she says.
Many of these kids are forced to cope
with very difficult circumstances every
day. They look forward to Saturdays spent
in a supported and nurtured environment
with caring adults who want to build them
up and show them that the future can be
bright and optimistic, she says.
Joe Mahlo, general manager of Engen
sales andmarketing, says: We are very en-
couraged by dealers like Louisa who give
of their time volunteering in the communi-
ty.
As a company committed to a policy of
community involvement and social uplift-
ment,we thankLouisaandhergroupof vol-

rand.
Oforbuike is n lig-
gaamsbouer. Hy en
Seymour het die klaer
met n pyp en bofbal-
kolf geslaan. Hulle het
n deel van sy oor en sy
kaak afgeslaan en sy
arm gebreek, vertel
maj. Fienie Nimb,
woordvoerder van die
Bellville-polisie.
Die klaer het daar-
in geslaag om by n
venster uit te spring
en in die straat af te
hardloop, waar bure
hom bebloed buite ge-
sien het en die polisie
gebel het.
Oforbuike het weg-
gery, teruggekom, n
vlug geslaan. Kort daarna het ons lede op
die toneel aangekom, vertel Nimb.
Met die polisie se aankoms is Seymour
in hegtenis geneem.
s Nimb.
Bordeel bedryf
Oforbuike het ook n bordeel bedryf in
Parow by die Simondr Villas-kompleks,

motor was sy paspoort, identiteitsdoku-
ment en selfs sy skeipapiere.
Sekerheidspersoneel
weer weg.
toor sy skootrekenaar, albei kluise net so
gelos.

Dis stunning
asmense hul
taal bly praat
Ek worry oor die toekoms van Afrikaans.
Die studente op varsity verkies Engels en
Afrikaanse ouers stuur hul kids na
Engelse skole.
Dis genuine shocking, hoor! Waar gaan
taal omgaan?
Gelukkig is my kids nog okay.
skoolgaan, Pa. Pietie van langsaan moet
nou Shakespeare Primary toe en hy ken
amper nie die difference tussen yes en
no nie. Dis sad, n?
so n jong kid so sterk oor sy roots voel.
Dit bly altyd vir my stunning as mense
nog goeie Afrikaans praat. Recently
sekere ice cream.

is nie hot nie, kan
sy maar Afrikaans
praat? Die omroe-
per s dis okay. Sy
s toe: Die fla-
vours is raspber-
ry, chocalate en
grape. En daar
wen sy toe wragtie!
Wys jou net: jy kn
nog presteer deur
op Afrikaans aan te
dring.
ons taal gaan survive of nie. Ek is so erg
blaf.
Nou die dag stop ek by n padstalletjie
omdat hulle produkte in Afrikaans op die
plakkaat geskryf is.
Ek was nooit n
my laaitie: Hoor net daar. Hy kon
netsowel ges het pass the ball to me,
maar hy hou by sy taal.
Nee kyk, Afrikaans hardloop darem nog
sterk deur party van ons se veins.
Dis s ama-a-a-a-zing, n? - Rudie van

I would like to reply to your

the worst idiocy and stupidity
I have ever heard of or read.
I have been involved with
the Tygerberg Nature Reserve
as a visitor and keen follower
of what they do and what they
have achieved past and
present. Recently they received
an award for being the best
reserve.
The women and sometimes a
male or two are volunteers
who like and appreciate
nature, and would like to make
a positive contribution to the
environment that we all live in
and share.
For those uninformed, these
volunteers do it in all the
reserves in the Cape.
We now seem to have a
bunch of decrepit people that
do nothing but complain. It
seems to me that they sit on
their a** all day with nothing
to do and then think up some
ludicrous subject to complain
about. Theyre mutts that do
nothing but bark all day,
making more noise than people
talking.
Why do these decrepit people
not shut up and become
volunteers and do something
constructive for their commu-
nity? My question is, what do

I have lived in Welgemoed for
15 months and right from the
beginning we have had someone
climb over our fencing at least
once a month and sometimes
it seems to be weekly espe-
cially around full moon.
We had some petty theft of
goods when we first moved in,
when the garden shed was left
unlocked or a small bedroom
window was left open at night.
The culprits often leave clues
of their presence, sometimes it
is a branch broken where it
shouldnt be.
Sometimes we hear small
garden pots or the top of a bird
bath being knocked over, but by
the time we get there to check,
the culprit has already scam-
pered.
What I can say is that the
intruder seems to be familiar
with the layout of our property
and also of our neighbouring
properties, using our connecting
fences/walls to enter or exit.
We now never leave a win-
dow open with anything in
reach; we never leave our
laundry or any garden equip-
ment outside in the garden or

W
ater is our most precious re-
source, so we need to explore
adapting our gardens by plant-
ing more water wise plants, says Nick Sto-
del, MD of Stodels Nurseries.
He says besides requiring less water, in-
digenous plants also reduce air pollution
and promote biodiversity and stewardship
of our natural heritage.
However, there seems to be amisconcep-
tion that indigenous plants lack colour,
which is why there has been a bit of resist-
ance to planning and planting an indige-
nous garden, says Nick, but nothing
could be further from the truth. Plants such
asgazania,bauhinia galpiniiandCapehon-
eysuckle (tecomacapensis) provide a blaze of
orange which can be contrasted with the
gentle blues of agapanthus, plumbago and
felicia. While pink indigofera and anisodon-
te and the violet flowers of tinnia barbata
can provide a pretty background to amixed
border. The possibilities and combinations
are endless.
For years the team at Stodels has been ad-
vocating indigenous gardening and at each
of the five Stodels branches one can view
awide range of indigenous plants fromvy-
gies through to Cape daisies, pincushions,
gazanias, clivias, confetti bushes, ericas
and proteas.
One spectacular but hardy plant that can
withstand periods of drought is the agapan-
thus. The thick, fleshy roots storewater and
food and they thrive and flower copiously
if planted in full sun with well drained soil
and plenty of compost.
When flowering they add lovely colour to
a garden from blue-purple to white and
sometimes even pink. Theymake attractive
container plants, even when not in flower,
and are excellent cut flowers.
Ask one of our trained staff for advice
because a properly designed indigenous
gardenwill provide loads of visual pleasure
throughout the year while saving water,
says Nick.
There is an enormous floral wealth in
theWestern Cape and itmakes sense to cap-
italise on what nature has supplied. Its a
winning combination.

This years Slave Route Challenge on Sun-
day 8 Maywill see participants run the usu-
al scenic route through the city while also
giving honour to individual slaves of the
Capes past.
Each runner will carry one of the 8 000
names of slaves who appear on a column
of memory at the Iziko Slave Lodge in the
city centre.
This was announced at the launch of this
years edition of the race at themuseum last
week.
Farouk Meyer of Itheko Sport Athletic
Club and organiser for the Slave Route
Challenge explains runners will have a spe-
cific purpose and a special honour in this
years race, referring to the column of
memory on which the names of 8 000 men,
women and children are inscribed.
This year, every person who registers
will run on behalf of one of these names on
the column, allowing each runner to hon-
our a specific personwhowas an important
part of our countrys past.
Organisers say the SlaveRouteChallenge
is more than just a race: it is a tribute to
the trials of dispossessed people who con-
tributed to the early development of Cape
Town and, as a result, South Africa.
The race route takes runners past several
historically significant landmarks, such as
the Castle of Good Hope, Grand Parade, the
Whipping Post, Old Slave Church, the Iziko
Slave Lodge and the Slave Tree Plaque.
Today the Iziko Slave Lodge is a site of
memory a place of reconciliation and
hope. The Slave Route Challenge provides
the runners the opportunity to actively en-
gage with this history and beyond the race
to explore, discover, reflect and reconnect
with their roots, says Paul Tichmann, cu-
rator of the Iziko Slave Lodge.
Meyer says this years race aims to hon-
our individuals and celebrate the collective
history and diversity of both the race en-
trants and the people they are remember-
ing.
This takes the race to a whole new level,
and personalises it for each runner, while
at the same time instilling a sense of unity
and meaning something so critical at this
point in time for our country, says Meyer.
The event is presented by Itheko Sport
AthleticClubunder the auspices ofWestern
Province Athletics. While there is a minor
change in the title and logo of the race this
year, it still forms part of Metropolitan
Lifesmojo serieswhich celebrates the com-
munity, and Metropolitan Life remains the
main sponsor.
Since the inaugural race in 2011, the an-
nual Slave Route Challenge has consisted of
a half marathon and a 10km run, as well as
a 5km fun run and walk, and a 10km big
walk for those who prefer a more leisurely
pace.
The half marathon is scheduled to kick
things off at the starting point in Darling
Street at 07:00, followed by the 10km run at
07:15, the 5km fun run and walk at 07:30 and
the 10km big walk at 07:45.

Two ofDurbanvilleHills chardonnaywines
are among the top 15 South African wines,
as judged during the 23rd annual Chardon-
nay du Monde in Burgundy, France.
Its 2015 Durbanville Hills chardonnay is
one of only six South African wines of this
varietal that have been awarded gold, whilst
the reserve 2014 Rhinofields Chardonnay
was awarded silver one of only nine South
African wines to receive this award.
In total worldwide only 63 wines received
gold and 196 wines silver medals of the 782
entries from 39 countries. The competition
took place from 8 to 11March at the Chteau
des Ravatys where some 300 judges, about
half of them from outside of France, evaluat-
ed the entries.
Martin Moore, Durbanville Hills cellar
master, says that this is a remarkable
achievement for the winery, especially for
its Durbanville Hills chardonnay, a wine
that is available nationwide and at a compet-
itive price.
For the 2015DurbanvilleHills chardonnay
the grapes from each vineyard block was
vinified separately. Some 80% of the wine
was fermented in steel tanks and left for four
months on the lees to achieve a pronounced
fruit character. The balance was fermented
and matured, also for four months, in the
presence of tight-grain French oak staves.
These added complexity and subtle oak fla-
vours without dominating the fruit charac-
ter of the wine.
Martin says they followamuch gentler ap-
proach with their Rhinofields chardonnay.
To ensure a seamless integration between
oakand fruit, 60%of thewinewas fermented
and matured in stainless steel tanks over a
12-month period.
The remainder of the wine spent a total of
12 months in French oak barrels, rolling the
barrels by hand instead of stirring the lees
in the conventional manner.
