Since1991AfricaInlandMission(AIM)andWycliffeBibleTranslatorsInternational(WBTI)haveworkedcooperativelytoprovidecounsellingandmentalhealthsupportservicesformissionariesatTumainiCounsellingCentreinNairobi,Kenya.‘Tumaini’isaSwahiliwordmeaning‘hope’.In2002wemovedintoabeautifulfacilitydesignedbothforourconfidentialcounsellingandmentalhealthministry,aswellasourmorepublicpreventativecarework;weevenhavebeautifulandrestfulgardensforquietreflection.TodayTumainiisaworld-leadingcentrespecializinginmissionarymentalhealthcare.

WhileweservethemembersofAIMandWBTI,wealsosupportmissionariesandtheirfamiliesfromover160like-mindedagenciesthroughoutAfrica,seeing350–400peopleeachyear.Muchofthisworkisface-to-faceconsultationsatTumaini,butwealsoofferdistanceservices,traveltomissionconferencesaroundAfrica,runseminarsandofferavarietyofotherresources.AnewsmallercentreinbasedinKampalaisopeninginMarch2016,tobetterservemissionariesworkinginCentralAfrica.OurstaffAllourmentalhealthcliniciansareexperiencedandprofessionallyqualifiedintheirhomecountries.Inaddition,theyaremissionariesthemselves,co-workersintheGreatCommission,workingtostrengthenGod’sservantsastheyfollowHiscall.Thecurrentteamincludespsychiatristsandpsychologists,psychotherapists,marriageandfamilytherapists,andcounsellorscomingfromtheUSandCanada,UK,GermanyandSouthKorea.
