Principal’s Message
This will be our last monthly newsletter for this
year and my last newsletter as the principal of
Hillcrest. At the May 25th meeting of the Simcoe
County District School Board, I was transferred
from Hillcrest P.S. to Terry Fox Elementary
School. It has been an amazing six years at
Hillcrest! We have seen so many accomplish-
ments as a school over this time, including the
conclusion of the construction project, the accom-
plishments of many of our school athletic teams,
and the welcoming of many new students to our
EFSL and French Immersion programs. I have
been truly blessed with a strong staff, great stu-
dents and supportive parents. I wish you all the
best!
I am pleased to announce that Mr. Crozier will be
the new principal of Hillcrest. Mr. Crozier is
currently the principal of Shanty Bay P.S. He is
an experienced principal and the transition for
Hillcrest will be smooth. I am sure that you will
give him as warm a welcome as I received 6 years
ago.
Stephanie D’Ambrosio
Good Bye…..
"Pop, poppety, popcorn Tigers! Just kidding,
Miss Bowins here - just taking a quick mo-
ment to say Good Bye to my fellow Teachers
and the students/parents of Hillcrest! It has
been a great two years at the Hill! I now look
forward to a new adventure and wish you all
the best in yours "
Grade 8 Grad
The Grade 8 Graduation will take place on Tuesday, June 28th at 6:30pm. Students need to be at school for 6pm.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
The students and staff of Hillcrest
P.S. are participating in the Heart
and Stroke foundation’s “Jump
Rope for Heart” event again this
year.
The event will take place on Friday, June 17th.
Students are currently asking friends and family
members to make pledges and donations.
Help us to reach this year’s goal of $5000!!
ARE YOU MOVING
Please let the school know if you are planning to move from our school area this summer. This helps greatly when we are planning for new classes for September.
Dear Hillcrest Families, I have accepted a teaching position at another school for September 2016. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hillcrest community for all the support that I have received over the past 24 years that I have taught here. During my time at Hillcrest I have had the wonderful opportunity to teach hundreds of students. Hillcrest has been home for me and a major part of my life during this time. I wish you all the best of health and happiness in your future. Have a wonderful summer! Mrs. Janet Johnston-Small
Library 2.0 News!
It’s June and the library is collecting all outstanding books. Students are reminded to find all of their library books and bring them to the library by June 9th. Students who bring in all of their books are eligible to win a prize from the Book Fair!
The Book Fair will be coming to Hillcrest June 13-15. Please come in and visit the Book Fair to get some great reads for your own personal library.
Also, we are creating the largest timeline in Simcoe County! Pennies will be used to mark each year on the timeline. So we need a penny for each year going back in time as far as possible. If you have any pennies at home, please bring them in. Thanks!
Mr. Reinio

Do you need to pick your child up early for appointments, etc. or
make after-school arrangements? Please avoid calls to the school at the end of the day to have messages relayed to your child. Unless it is an emergency, kindly make these arrangements ahead of time by sending a note with your child in the morning to inform your child’s teacher. Write the note in their agenda. Please be aware that the school telephone is used by students for emergency purposes only, not for after-school arrangements. Your child needs to be aware of after-school arrangements before arriving for school in the morning. This way we avoid the constant interruptions to classrooms.
Closed to Out-of-Area
Accommodation pressures over the short and long term
will build in schools offering French Immersion and Extended French as a Second Language.
In the 2016-2017 school year, Hillcrest will be closed to out-of-area students.
PAY FOR FIELD TRIPS, MILK, ETC. WITH SCHOOLCASH ONLINE
The SchoolCash Online program is now available at all schools, offering parents the option to pay online for field trips, milk, pizza and other items. The program is intended to reduce paper,
eliminate the need for students to travel with money, and for money to be counted and stored at schools. Payment by credit card has now also been added. Parents who sign up will receive a notification when a new item becomes available for purchase. Items are personalized to each student. Parents will use a secure online account to process payments, and can either make a one-time payment for each item as it occurs, or load money to carry a balance in the online account to make payments in the future. To create an online account, go to https://simcoecounty.schoolcashonline.com. Please contact the school office with any questions.
FROM THE OFFICE
In an effort to preserve the learning environment in the school, please read the following:
Students are expected to come to school on time (school starts at 8:55!) and be prepared with their belongings needed for the day. We are experiencing a high volume of traffic in the office with a myriad of items being dropped off such as homework, clothing items, lunches etc. Punctuality and organization are life skills that your children are going to need in the future.
If you are picking up your child during the day, please send in a note with your child indicating the time of pick up. If you come to the school a few minutes early, please be prepared to wait. Phoning into the classroom disrupts the learning environment. At present we have parents who send a note, phone the school to say they are a few minutes away and also ask to have their child called down. This only adds to the busyness of the office.
Please try not to call the school during the day with a change in pick up plans. We cannot guarantee the safe-ty of your child or may not get the message through in time.
Your help with these matters is very much appreciated.
Kindergarten Registration

Busing Procedures
Bus passes are ONLY given to students who are currently taking the bus to school. Bus passes will NOT be given to non busing students.
Ensure your child’s immunization record is up to date

You can update your child's immunization record in one of the following ways:
* Online at: www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/immsonline * Fax: 705-726-3962 * Call: 705-721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 ext. 8807 The health unit hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

First Rider Program prepares first time JK/SK/Primary bus riders
The Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium (SCSTC) offers a free First Rider Program for first-time school bus riders, which includes a ride on a real school bus. This safety program is provided by the SCSTC, in partnership with our school bus operators, to educate students and their families of the rules and responsibilities on and around the school bus. Sessions will take place in August across Simcoe County. Parents/guardians and their children attending any school in Simcoe County may attend any of the sessions. For more information and First Rider session dates, see the SCSTC website at: http://main.simcoecountyschoolbus.ca/safety-tips
Recognize a STAR at your school!
Our employee recognition program, SCDSB STARS, provides the opportunity for members of the school community to nominate an outstanding SCDSB teacher, custodian, educational assistant, early childhood educator, administrator, office staff person, etc. who has done something wonderful to support students in our system.
Nominees will be informed of the nomination and the staff person will receive a personalized thank you and commemorative lapel pin from our Director of Education. It’s just one way to recognize the shining stars in our education system who make a difference every day in our schools, facilities and classrooms. Nominate an outstanding staff person by visiting www.scdsb.on.ca and clicking on ‘Staff , then ‘SCDSB Stars.’
Safe cycling tips from Parachute Canada
Get ready for biking season and be a role model for cycling safety by following these important yet simple tips:
Protect your head-wear a helmet: A properly fitted and correctly worn bike helmet can reduce the risk of serious head injury by up to 80%.
Check your ride: Make sure bikes are adjusted to the right height for the rider, inflate tires and check that brakes are working properly.
Be prepared: Get trained in bicycle safety and rules of the road. Use hand signals and respect traffic sig-nals, stopping at all stop signs and stoplights.
Pick family friendly routes: Protect young riders by riding on quiet roads, trails and designated cy-cling routes
