INTRODUCTION
Provenance
The collection of Moodie-Strickland-Vickers-Ewing family papers was acquired from the estate of Patrick Hamilton Ewing, the great-great grandson of Susanna and J.W. Dunbar Moodie. Ewing’s mother, Katherine Deeks, a silent film actress, was the daughter of Ethel R. Ewing and Samuel William Ewing of Montreal. Ethel R. Ewing was the daughter of Catherine Moodie Vickers and John Joseph Vickers, a Toronto businessman. Catherine Moodie Vickers was the eldest daughter of Susanna and J.W. Dunbar Moodie. (see the Moodie Family Tree).
After a career in London, and an active role in the Resistance movement during the war, Patrick Hamilton Ewing settled in New York State. Upon the death of his grandmother, the collection of family papers that Ethel had inherited from her mother, Catherine Moodie Vickers, was shipped to Ewing’s home and stored, undisturbed, in his attic. After Ewing died in March 1986, the collection was offered to the National Library of Canada and acquired with the assistance of a grant under the terms of the Cultural Property Export and Import Act.

Scope and content
Series I. Correspondence. 1826-1946 Nov. 28, 1826-Mar. 22, 1946 Extent: 26 cm of textual records (1 Box): handwritten. - 78 cm of textual records: photocopies
Scope and content note In this series: in addition to letters from the Strickland sisters to their relatives in Canada, letters from Donald Moodie to his brother and letters exchanged between Susanna and J.W. Dunbar Moodie, there is an interesting correspondence relating to Henrietta Moodie Vickers, an artist who lived in Paris and Tangiers, and documents concerning her death and estate.
Notes The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by the surname of the writer of the letter, then chronologically. Boxes 1-3 contain photocopies of the original correspondence; to be used for consultation.
Series II. Manuscripts. 1821-[188?] 1821-[188?] Extent: 148 cm of textual records (4 Boxes)
Scope and content note This series consists almost entirely of manuscripts by Susanna Moodie and J.W. Dunbar Moodie. Only minimal effort has been made to identify by facsimiles due to their fragility.
Series III. Photographs and paintings. 1860-1914 [ca. 1860]-1914 Extent: 13 photographs: b&w. - 6 paintings: watercolour . -1 engraving
Scope and content note There are only a few family photographs in the collection. This series contains two original watercolours by Susanna Moodie and a watercolour portrait, identified as Susanna Moodie, which are of considerable interest.
Notes Facsimiles have been provided in order to protect the originals from further deterioration.
iv
Series IV. Clippings and memorabilia. 1824-1949 [May 20, 1824?]-[Mar. 29, 1949?] Extent: 51 cm of textual records (3 Boxes)
Scope and content note This series contains: clippings for book reviews, death notices and topics which relate to the families. The material found here includes receipts, scrapbooks and some photographs, as well as a lock of Susanna Moodie’s hair and a piece of brocade from Catherine Moodie’s wedding dress.
This series is arranged in two subseries: Clippings and Memorabilia
A. Clippings [May 20, 1824?]-[Mar. Extent: 27 cm of textual records
Scope and content note This subseries contains dated and undated clippings relating to the family and relating to their topics of interest. Included here are obituaries and articles relating to the families, along with clippings from scrapbooks.
Dated clippings are arranged chronologically.
B. Memorabilia 1839-1939 Extent: 24 cm of textual records and other material
Scope and content note The materials included in this subseries are various, ranging from legal documents to calling card and bookplate memorabilia. Included here are additional photographs.
Series V. Printed Materials 1673-[c. 1953] 1759-1874 Extent: textual records: monographs and sheet music
Scope and content note: This series contains the books and pamphlets received with the archival collection. Included here are works by and about members of the Moodie, Strickland, Vickers and Traill families as well as inscribed personal copies of works by others.
Notes: The books and pamphlets received with the collection have been transferred to the Rare Book Collection, National Library of Canada. Their provenance has been recorded in the books themselves and in the cataloguing records. One piece of sheet music, In friendship's name, by J.W. Dunbar Moodie has been transferred to the Music Division, National Library of Canada.
