Concept of MeBo
ISAES 2011 workshop Antarctic Shallow Drilling T. Freudenthal, MeBo wireline drilling system
Concept of MeBo
• Mast, drill head and flush water pump form the central drilling unit
• Drill rig has access to drilling tools stored within two magazines
• The drill string is built up and down using a loading arm and two chucks
• Stability on the sea floor is increased by movable legs

• Stable platform – optimal drill bit control
• No need for drill pipe through the water column
• Operation from multipurpose research

ISAES 2011 workshop Antarctic Shallow Drilling T. Freudenthal, MeBo wireline drilling system
• hight of magazines and mast has to be increased by 2.4 m (total system hight about 9 m
• Statics of frame/legs and of the launch and recovery system have to be re-engineered
a 200 m drill
• Hydraulics, telemetry, control and energy system of MeBo are suitable for 200 m drill
00 MeBo2 • 200 m drilling depth can be reached
by doubling of the stroke length and increasing number of slots from 32 to 40

Summary
Foto: V. Diekamp
• Sea floor drill rigs are a cost effective alternative when shallow drillings are required
• Transportable system like the MeBo can be operated world wide on vessels of opportunity
• Drilling from a stable platform at the sea bed is prerequisite for high quality cores
• Wire line drilling technology has severe advantages compared to conventional drilling with respect to time and core quality
• In situ measurements in the logging while tripping mode are possible
• Sea bed drill rigs can provide a cheaper opportunity for the installation of bore hole monitoring observatories
