Johann Tetzel Selling indulgences, 1517

“The Devil is forever attracting people to good works to make sure that

they do not reach the point of thinking that

they need the grace and mercy of Christ.”

Martin Luther

21. Those who preach indulgences are in error when the they say that a

man is absolved and saved from every penalty by the

pope’s indulgences.

27. There is no divine authority for preaching that the soul flies out of purgatory immediately

when the money clinks in the bottom of the chest.

33. We should be most carefully on our guard against those who say that the papal

indulgences are an inestimable divine gift, and that a man is reconciled to

God by them.

Ephesians 2:1-10

Pew Bible: Pg 976

1. Everyone is helplessly & hopelessly dead thus requiring the monergistic work of God’s grace.

Erasmus v. Luther, 1525

• Because of the sinner’s spiritual state of deadness.

• Because of the sinner’s natural bondage and propensity to follow the world, Satan, & the flesh.

• Because of the sinner’s inherited sinful nature.

Romans 5:18

“Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for

all men….”

Romans 5:18

all men….”

Prevenient grace –A non-saving grace that universally comes

“before” which overcomes the effects of total depravity in all sinners bringing

them to a place of moral neutrality whereby they may on their own choose

to accept or reject Christ.

2. God worked alone in making us alive according to His grace.

Monergism: The view that regeneration is

accomplished exclusively by the working of God.

Synergism: The idea that the human works together with

God in certain aspects of salvation – especially in

regeneration, which is said to be a cooperative effort of

divine aid and human faith.

God’s Motive:

God’s rich mercy & great love!

Romans 9:15-16 – “For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. So then it

depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who has

mercy.”

God’s Method:

God makes us alive “with Christ!”

God’s Purpose:

Glory to God alone in the coming ages!

3. God in His grace created us to do good works.

Application for Today:

Application for Today:

1. Means of Grace:

Preaching & the Word must be supreme knowing that faith

comes by hearing of the Word.

Application for Today:

2. For Yourself:

Humility, Praise & Gratitude should be your life song knowing that God

has been merciful to you.

Application for Today:

3. For lost friends & family:

Keep praying & getting them under the Word knowing that it is

God who saves.
