Sofa
More than any other type of furniture, a sofa is an expression of its owner’s lifestyle. And while the choice
can seem endless, one thing is certain: a sofa is always the centre of attention, setting the tone in your interior.
By virtue of its size alone, a sofa’s shape, materials and colours become defining stylistic elements. Yet, its
underlying purpose always remains the same: to provide ultimate comfort.
Vitra makes it easy to choose the right sofa. The Vitra Home Collection offers such distinctive styles, typologies
and functional features that you will intuitively know which sofa suits you. Each of our sofas has its own identity.
But what happens before a Vitra sofa can take centre stage in your living room and be claimed for lazy hours
on a Sunday afternoon? A sofa design must first progress through numerous stages, taking shape in the
hands of many different experts.

2 Vitra Sofa
Every sofa begins with a designer’s inspiration... Vitra works with innovative and creative designers,
and invites them to give free rein to their imagination. They develop concepts and sketches based on perceived
customer needs or new ideas. On site at Vitra, sofa prototypes are built, rigorously tested and redesigned
until everyone is satisfied …and is made a reality by our sofa experts. The upholstery development team Over the years Vitra has established a team of soft seating experts.
With passion for their craft and an enthusiasm for innovation, they translate the designer’s vision into an
upholstery structure that provides the desired seating comfort and retains its shape for many years.
The test center In our own test centre, all sofas – whether brand new designs or established classics – undergo
rigorous testing beyond the required national standards, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, all
year round. This guarantees the exceptional quality of our sofas, which surpass statutory norms.
The manufacturing experts After a new sofa design has been proven to be stable and perfectly comfort-
able, our development team hands over the project to our own Vitra sofa manufacturing facility in Europe.
The colour & material team Vitra is working hand in hand with the Dutch designer Hella Jongerius who
con ducted an intensive study of the qualities and possibilities of colour and texture in textiles and materials.
The result is the Vitra Colour & Material Library, which enables everyone to create an almost infinite number
of moods: choose from neutral or dramatic hues, pastel shades or elegant darks.
By combining our expertise in design and development with the best materials and advanced production
skills, we guarantee that Vitra sofas are not only beautiful, but also long-lasting and extremely comfortable.
‘At Vitra, there is space for experimentation,
not only in techniques but also in style.’ Hella Jongerius

Soft Modular Sofa by Jasper Morrison
When a designer gets himself into the sofa zone
As its name suggests, Jasper Morrison’s Soft Modular Sofa is soft and modular. In other words: it offers
exceptional comfort and can be arranged in any number of configurations. Getting into the ‘sofa-zone’,
Morrison updated and improved the classic low-slung modular sofa according to his philosophy of ‘super
normal’ design, which aims to create products that are first and foremost ‘good at what they are’. With its
carefully balanced proportions and renunciation of decorative details, the Soft Modular Sofa makes for a
refined addition to any interior.

Soft Modular Sofa6
Jasper Morrison lives and works in London and Tokyo. His designs are expressions of his ‘super normal’
design philosophy: rather than seeking unusual or extravagant results, he often breathes new life into proven
solutions by means of reinterpretation, further development and refinement. He has worked together with
Vitra on a regular basis since 1989.
Jasper Morrison — ‘Designing soft seating, you have to get yourself into the sofa zone before you start. It’s
a bit more abstract, usually less structural and, as Alessandro Mendini has pointed out, very hard to do
well. A good design seems to require something that’s difficult to put a finger on, a certain sofa-ish factor
that expresses itself in the final object, but which cannot easily be defined. I once tried to create a sofa
from a series of cube shaped cushions filled with polystyrene balls connected together with zips. It was an
interesting concept, but not one destined for success. It felt like sitting on bags of cement!’

In 2004, Rolf Fehlbaum, Vitra’s CEO at the time, invited Dutch designer Hella Jongerius to design a sofa
for Vitra. ‘Why a sofa?’ she answered. ‘I hate sofas, big blocks of foam – I never see a sofa that I like.’
To which Fehlbaum replied, ‘Then why don’t you make one you like yourself?’
Rising to the challenge, Jongerius began experimenting with ideas that would result in the Polder Sofa. Inspired
by her home country of the Netherlands, the Polder Sofa’s name references a characteristic feature of the
Dutch landscape: a polder is a low-lying stretch of land that has been reclaimed from the sea.

The Dutch designer Hella Jongerius lives and works in Berlin. She founded the Jongeriuslab studio in 1993
and began collaborating with Vitra in 2004. Since then, she has not only contributed a substantial number
of designs to the continually expanding Vitra Home Collection, but has also applied her expertise in the
realm of colours and materials to the Vitra Colour & Material Library.
Hella Jongerius — ‘Buying a sofa is very difficult. As a consumer you spend months choosing a model, and
then you are presented with hundreds of fabric samples. And of course you can’t remember the colour of
your carpet, or your curtains, so then you just choose black or cream. I am stepping into the shoes of the
consumer, offering them a small range of colours, just four different hues. It’s like a restaurant – a short
menu is always the best because it means the experts in the kitchen are helping you to choose. And that
means you’re more willing to take a risk.’

Suita Sofaby Antonio Citterio
When Swiss engineering meets Italian design
Uniting Swiss (SUI) engineering and Italian (ITA) flair, designer Antonio Citterio created a sophisticated
sofa system that combines technical precision with a lightweight, streamlined aesthetic. Suita Sofa is
characterised by its striking geometric body and cushions, seemingly suspended over sleek aluminium legs
that have affinities with mid-century American design. Suita Sofa’s multifunctional system offers endless
possibilities for adaptation, making it suitable for any interior.

The architect and designer Antonio Citterio, who lives and works in Milan, has collaborated with Vitra since
1988. Together they have produced a series of office chairs and various office systems, as well as products
for the Vitra Home Collection. The Citterio Collection is constantly being expanded.
Antonio Citterio — ‘For me a sofa is a support and a cushion. This approach is simple, but not simplistic.
I have seen many changes over the years, but it is the contemporary classic designs that are still on the
market. When you think about a sofa, you are really thinking about how people live. Today people sit on
a sofa in many different ways, and it is important to create flexibility. A living room is no longer a place to
receive guests; it has become a family room. Today living is about relaxing and enjoying free time. A sofa
has become a soft surface that you use in many different ways: to watch TV, to sleep, to eat…’

With its graceful and wing-like adjustable panels, the Mariposa Sofa was aptly named after the Spanish
word for butterfly. When designing Mariposa, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby sought to create the kind
of sofa that offers maximum reward after a long day’s work. By bringing exceptional comfort to the concept
of a sofa with adjustable back and side panels, the designers achieved their original aim: ‘Getting cosy’,
they say, ‘that was the ambition.’

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby studied architecture as fellow students at the Royal College of Art in

furniture design and architecture.
Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby — ‘The Mariposa is the combination of a concept – the idea of a sofa with
a moving back and sides – and a personal need, because at the time we were both looking for the kind
of sofa that rewards you on a Friday night, that everyone can pile on to and have a cuddle. We also made
it big enough for two people to lie on, one at each end, finishing their emails and then, putting away their
computers, swinging round and watching a movie. Getting cosy, that was the ambition.’
