The Asia Private Equity Institute Leveraged Buyout Case Competition 2016 (APEI
LBO CC) is a private equity case competition hosted by the Asia Private Equity
Club at Singapore Management University (APECS).
APECS is proud to present the APEI LBO CC in 2016 again, riding on the success
of the 2015 edition. The competition is held in association with the New York
School of Finance (NYSF) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst
Association® (CAIA). The event is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate
students from Universities across the world. The competition offers a great
platform for student teams to explore the Asia private equity scene, analyse and
evaluate potential buyouts of companies in Asia, and interact with top academic
and industry talent.
About NYSF

The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students with a strong
interest in private equity.
Interested students can form teams of 3 to 4 students.
All members of a given team must belong to the same University.
Each team should decide on a team name and should nominate one team leader.
Team leaders are responsible for all submissions and communications with the organisers
of the competition.
Registrations open on 18 November 2015 and closes on 11 December 2015 at 11.59 pm
SGT (GMT +8). Grand finale will be held at Singapore Management University on 1st March
2016 (See detailed event format below).
Registration fees: S$32.10 per team (including Goods and Services Tax).
All submissions will be subject to an initial review by the Academic Director of APEI and
successful entries will subject to further in-depth review by a team of NYSF experts.
For the preliminary round, participating teams are required to submit a 1,000 word
investment thesis and an excel file containing the supporting valuation model. All
submissions are to be made to apei-lbocase@smu.edu.sg on or before 4 January 2016 at
11.59 pm SGT (GMT +8).
Shortlisted teams will proceed to the semi-finals held in the week of 25 January 2016. The
format will be a 15 minute Q&A webcast with the NYSF team. Teams will be allowed the
use of 10 Power-point slides to defend their analysis during the live Q&A session.
5 teams will be shortlisted for the grand finals to be held on 1 March 2016. A new case will
be issued on 5 February 2016 and finalists will have 20 minutes to present their findings to
a panel of judges, followed by 10 minutes of Q&A.
Overseas teams will have to attend the finals in person.
Competition Rules and Guidelines
Competition Format
On 15 December 2015, participating teams will receive via email a package containing a link to the
customized case study prepared by the New York School of Finance (NYSF). Teams will be expected
to analyze, evaluate and present a 1,000 word investment thesis and an Excel workbook that will also
contain the supporting analysis and modeling. Shortlisted teams will proceed to the semi-finals — a
15 minute live Q&A webcast with the NYSF team, during which they will be given the opportunity to
defend their analysis using a maximum of 10 PowerPoint slides. The primary objective of this
preliminary round is to evaluate the technical skills of the participating teams. All submissions will be
subject to an initial review by the Academic Director of APEI and successful entries will subject to
further in-depth evaluation by a panel of New York School of Finance experts. All submissions must be
made to apei-lbocase@smu.edu.sg before 11.59 pm Singapore Time on 4 January 2016.
The finalists of the APEI LBO CC will be announced on 5 February 2016 at 9am Singapore time,
during which five (5) shortlisted teams will receive via email a new competition package containing the
specifics of the Grand Finale. Each team (Non-Singaporean Finalists) will have to travel to Singapore
to present at the finals. Teams will be expected to identity attractive LBO targets in Asia based on
stringent rules set by the event organizers. Teams will be expected to construct a 1,500 word
investment thesis for their chosen target, develop a supporting LBO model, and prepare a pitch-book
for presentation. The finalists will be expected to make a 20 minute presentation to a panel of judges
on 1 March 2016 in Singapore Management University. The main focus during the finals will be on the
teams’ presentation and decision-making skills. During the 10 minute Q&A session, the finalist teams
will be challenged by the panel, which will evaluate the potential deal from the viewpoint of a senior
private equity GP.

About Us
The Asia Private Equity Institute Leveraged Buyout Case Competition
2016 (APEI LBO CC) is organized by the Asia Private Equity Club at
Singapore Management University (APECS). APECS is the first ever
student run PE club at Singapore Management University (SMU) and
has had strong and vibrant growth since its launch in August 2014.
APECS has a solid membership base of over 200 members and
operates under the auspices of the illustrious Asia Private Equity
Institute (APEI), a pre-eminent private equity research centre.
As a student run club, APECS focuses on educating student members
about the private equity industry, assisting in exploring career paths
for students in the PE industry, connecting with fellow students across
the world to share best practices and learn from each other ’s diverse
experiences, and finally to engage with the private equity
professionals in Singapore. APECS is creating a huge impact
amongst students with its wide ranging activities, from ‘Watermark ’-
our semi-annual publication to Inside PE, a set of guest speaker
seminars. By hosting the APEI LBO CC, APECS seeks to reach out to
students from across the globe with a keen interest in private equity
and develop a tightly knit peer learning network.
