on projects for Nike, the V&A and

Elle Blakeman is editor-in-chief of
the Mayfair Magazine. She has pre-

writes about the secret of looking
efortlessly stylish in the great out-

Ray Oranges
Ray Oranges created this season’s
cover illustration for SHOP Aus-

clever use of space and scale makes
him the perfect illustrator for this
cover, inspired by our feature on

HERITAGE MADE MODERN
Parisian fashion house Hermès
has been creating beautiful silk
scarves since 1937. The brand has a
rich equestrian heritage, refected in
the horse motif of this design, which
has been thoroughly modernised
with a comic book-style interpreta-
tion. The frst Hermès scarves were
made with innovative yarn spun
from raw Chinese silk, immediately
attracting the attention of the most
stylish Parisians. Today each scarf is
woven from the silk of 250 silkworm
cocoons. Each design takes years
to create as skilled artists search
for the perfect inspirations before
each design is individually screen-
printed. The company is constantly
developing to remain at the top of
its game. A scarf from Hermès is a
piece of heritage made modern. hl

RETRO REVIVAL
In a rejection of the digital age,
the ever-growing Lomography
community heralds the virtues of
analogue photography and artistic
experimentation. The company
was established in Vienna in the
1990s when a group of students
discovered an old Russian Lomo
LC-A camera and were inspired
by the distinctive photographs it
produced, characterised by vibrant
colour, deep saturation and vi-
gnette framing. The friends agreed
a distribution deal for the camera
and founded Lomography, propel-
ling the camera to international
fame. The company has since gone
on to produce faithful replicas of
other retro camera designs, in cas-
ings as fun and colourful as the im-
ages they produce. The Diana F+
Mr Pink is one of the company’s
best-selling models. gl

BAGS FOR LIFE
Ina Kent established her epony-
mous accessories label in 2007.
Her desire was to create something
which played with the balance be-
tween aesthetics and functional-
ity, and so her range of practical
yet stylish bags was born. Using
robust leathers, Ina Kent bags are
made to be used again and again.
The laid-back designs are loved for
their simplicity, and Kent sticks
to a tried and tested formula, ex-
perimenting with materials and
colours but retaining the no-non-
sense shapes that gained her an au-
dience in the frst place. mkh

Far from mourning the loss of
summer in Austria, here the winter
season brings a calendar of events
so delightful that you will be pray-

classical music festivals and other
celebrated cultural events, there is
the ski season; Austria has some of

to biscuits and mulled wine that

While Austria is a wonder-

dressing to enjoy it demands real
sartorial skill. While summer rev-

Winter in Austria is not
a time for drawing the
curtains and retreating
indoors until spring. In fact, the
very opposite is true; the country’s
winter season, from Salzburg to
Vienna, is a social whirl in which
style, culture and a sense of the
grand occasion take centre stage.
The grande dame of these
lavish occasions is the world-re-
nowned Wiener Opernball (Vi-
enna Opera Ball), held every Feb-
ruary at the elegant opera house.
This annual event is a time when
the members of Austria’s high so-
ciety can don their fnery, relive

Jewellery is a key component of
the winter-glamour wardrobe, and
nods discreetly to Austria’s place
as a leader in the feld throughout
the decades – who can forget Franz

modern-day empress aspirations,

for winter, as Isabella Redmond
Styles discovers on a tour of the country’s fnest restaurants
toric Linzer torte, which features shortcrust pastry with jam and a distinctive lattice top.
Austria is also home to some of Europe’s oldest restaurants, and many of the country’s historic eat-eries proudly uphold the region’s rich culinary heritage. Even so, there are a growing number of res-taurants catering to more interna-tional tastes, ofering menus that range from fresh, authentically Asian favours to those pioneering a farm-to-table concept. Expect to find a restaurant to suit every taste.
When looking for winter comfort food, there are few better culi-nary destinations than Austria. The country’s traditional dishes, including Tafelspitz (boiled beef served with horseradish), a selec-tion of savoury and sweet dump-lings and, of course, apple strudel, are known for their heartiness. Vis-itors to Austria with a sweet tooth are sure to be satisfed by the coun-try’s extensive range of desserts and pastries. One of innsbruck’s most promi-nent culinary destinations, Alfred Miller’s Schöneck has been a lo-cal favourite since 1899. don’t let the cosy ambiance deceive you – the restaurant currently holds one Michelin star and diners can choose between two outstanding set menus. The kitchen combines traditional Tyrolean dishes such as Speck dumplings with haute-
cuisine favourites such as foie gras with efortless skill. The restau-rant’s alpine-inspired interior pro-vides a perfect hideaway on cold winter nights, featuring wood-panelled walls, traditional furnish-ings and foral accents throughout. Graz’s annual Christmas markets become
one of the city’s most popular attractions
as soon as the temperature drops. Every
December a spectacular market is held
in front of the Rathaus, playing host to an
array of stalls selling a selection of handi-
crafts and traditional food and drink. Opt
for the local speciality Feuerzangenbowle,
a mix of hot wine and flaming rum which is
sure to be warming. The market is suitable
for the whole family, with entertainment op-
tions including a carousel, which is certain
to appeal to younger visitors.

Büro Baumann.
Ludwig Reiter.
