SOUTH STRADBROKE FREE FROM LARGE PESTSA survey to identify if South Stradbroke Island was harbouring large vertebrate
pests found it to be almost pest free - apart from the ubiquitous cane toad! The
survey findings will now determine if there
is a need to instigate pest management
control.
A large proportion of the Island was
checked using sand plots positioned along
sand roadways, tracks and trails. Passive
infrared sensor cameras were also set up at many locations around the Island.
The foreshore was checked including the high water line from both southern and
northern extremities and dead birds were checked for signs of scavenging.
Linda Durham SEQC welcomed theses outcomes
South Stradbroke Island has a really diverse marine and coastal environment
and the survey confirmed sightings of several native species including the agile
wallaby. It is really magnificent to know that we have an almost pest free island
so close to an urban centre, she said.
SOIL EROSION WORKSHOPA large gathering of groups across the broad
spectrum of natural resource management in the
Gold Coast gathered to hear a leading national
expert Grant Witheridge talk about Managing
Creek Erosion.
Grant explored creek erosion issues and provided
easy to understand advice on best practice
mitigation and erosion control. Erosion is a big issue
for all Gold Coast Catchments and recent severe weather events have beendevastating to parts of the waterways.

I am thrilled with the outcome of this workshop. I had a strong feeling therewas a community knowledge gap with regards to creeks and erosion. I hopethe community take this knowledge, follow up on it and get the support theyneed to make changes to protect their land and soil and our creeks and water-ways. I would like to thank Gold Coast City Council and Nerang RiversKeepers for their wonderful support for this event. Linda Durham CommunityPartnerships Manager for SEQ Catchments.
