COMMITMENT
Advent Penance Service
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. So submit yourselves to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you…Begin to lament, to mourn, to weep…Humble yourselves before the
Lord and he will exalt you” (James 4:6-10).

WEEKEND
THIS IS
“You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” --1 Peter 2:5
WHAT DOES “ADVENT” MEAN?
This time within the Church’s liturgical year is a season of
beginnings. To be sure, not only does Advent mark the
beginning of the liturgical year, but it is meant to be a time
where Christians everywhere are called to contemplate—or
better, to relive those events that led up to the first coming
of the Messiah—of Jesus who is called the Christ (or
“anointed one”). It is for this reason, then, that we might
ask ourselves why we began this season with a reading from the Gospel that spoke not of beginnings, but the end of all
things—that is, the second coming of Jesus, the parousia, the apocalypse, Armageddon, the consummation of time, the
end of history, and the final manifestation of God’s glory for which we pray everyday (i.e., “thy kingdom come…”).
And so the question remains: Why at the beginning would we begin with the end?
At the very least, we might conclude that the Church in her wisdom wishes to bring into relief a certain con-
nection that exists between the first and second coming of Christ. As you will notice, the Advent prayers during Mass
over the next four weeks would suggest as much. In his commentary on the liturgy, Pope Benedict, among others, has
advanced a certain understanding with regard to the Church’s choice of readings and prayers. It is this: Though the
Tradition has always spoken correctly of the two comings of Christ (one in history, and one yet to come), there is an-
other sense in which the second coming of Christ is, in fact, better understood as the fulfillment of the one coming of
Christ, which is still in progress. Indeed, Jesus did not merely come into the world (past tense), but is even now com-
ing into the world (present tense)!
This begins to make sense when we consider several ways in which it is manifestly true that God is yet to be
done with several projects, so to speak, that he initiated at the beginning of time. For example, God is still creating the
world. This is nowhere more evident than when a baby is conceived—that miraculous act whereby God brings out of
nothingness a new and unrepeatable little soul and sets it to growing in the womb of his or her mother. During his life
on earth, Jesus was about the work of redemption—of making the world new and of giving the world back to his father
as a gift. This, by the way, is the act we find ourselves part of in the liturgy (i.e., “Blessed are you Lord God of all
creation, for through Your goodness we have this bread we offer You: Fruit of the Earth and the work of human hands
it will become for us the Bread of Life”). The work that Jesus began is a work that continues—a work that will not end
until the consummation of time. Jesus is even now coming into the world.
For these reasons, Pope Benedict goes on to reflect that “‘advent’ does not mean ‘expectation,’ as some may
think….It is a translation of the Greek word parousia which means ‘presence’ or, more accurately, ‘arrival,’ i.e., the
beginning of a presence.” It is for this reason, then, that elsewhere, the Pope tells us that all those who claim and hold
the title Christian together make up a “communion of advent”—that is, a community of faith that at all times and eve-
rywhere holds in its heart the miraculous truth of a new presence of God in its midst. Writes the Holy Father: “Advent,
then, means a presence begun, the presence being that of God. Advent reminds us, therefore, of two things: first, that
God’s presence in the world has already begun, that he is present though in a hidden manner; second, that his presence
has only begun and is not yet full and complete, that it is in a state of development, of being and progressing toward its
full form.”
What the Pope is suggesting is not something new; it is an aspect of the timeless deposit of faith entrusted to
the Church by Christ from the beginning. It is, namely, the revelation of the Father through the Son in the Unity of the
Holy Spirit. It is a revelation that is at once ancient and yet beautiful, fresh, and ever new. It is the revelation of a God
who came quietly in the vulnerable form of a baby who needed for his very survival his mother’s care and his adoptive
father’s protection. It is the revelation of a God who remained so vulnerable that he was nailed to the Cross by the
unknowing hands of the very people he came to save. It is the revelation of a God who became man, who came to his
people, is even now coming to his people, and, by his own promise, shall never again leave his people. Let us pray
during this season “Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” seeing, with the Church, that
what was afoot with a small beginning is best understood by the magnitude of its end. Amen.
God Bless!
Fr. John Johnson

A REFLECTION FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Today’s scripture read-ings remind us that as we celebrate the Advent season and await the celebration of Christ-mas, we are to do so actively – boldly pro-claiming the Lord’s praises and giving Him glory in the way we live our lives. Advent is a season of waiting, but the wait is not a passive one. Rather, we are called to be actively preparing the meet the Savior, readying our hearts and our minds for His coming. The gospel for today encourages us, “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths. Every valley shall be filled and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight and the rough made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” But how do we do so? We live our lives for the Lord. We offer Him ourselves in gratitude for the many things He has given us and the many things He has done, and, in so doing, we proclaim His greatness to the world, helping others come to recognize His wonder and His majesty. “Bear on your head the mitre that displays the glory of the eternal name. For God will show all the earth your splendor: you will be named by God forever the peace of justice, the glory of God’s worship.” This Advent season offers us a time to reas-sess how well we are living for God. Is it obvious to everyone we meet that we are stewards of God’s many gifts? Does the way we use what the Lord has given us proclaim His praises to the world? Are we ready to greet Him – both as we celebrate Christmas and when we meet Him face-to-face when He comes again? Or is there more we can do?

Kids Can… Feed the Hungry There is a boy here who has five barley
loaves and two fish. --John 6:9
Because God has given us gifts of good food, family, and friendship, we try to show our thanks for those gifts by shar-ing them with others. As Christian stew-ards, feeding the hungry is one way we can share those gifts. The story of how Jesus fed 5,000 people appears in each of the four Gospels. You can read the story in your Bible: Matthew 14:13-20 Mark 6:34-44 Luke 9:11-17 John 6:1-13 Go shopping together to find examples of your favorite foods. Talk about how God provides for our needs by giving us a variety of foods. Take some of the food you buy and share it with someone else - a neighbor, family members, or a food bank. Stewardship Prayer Feeding the Hungry Dear God, You bless us with good things to eat. Open our eyes so we can see the hun-gry people around us. Help us share your gift of food with them. Help us change our world so everyone will have the food they need to live and grow. We ask this through your Son, Jesus, the Bread of Life. Amen.
Saint Peter Canisius
Doctor of the Church
Stewardship Saint of the Month
Feast Day, December 21
Saint Peter Canisius was a Jes-
uit priest at the height of the
many Protestant reformations
in 16th century Europe. He is
known as a prolific Catholic
theologian, preacher, teacher
and evangelizer. Following his
stewardship desire to serve
God in the Church in Germany,
he became the first Dutchman
to join the newly formed Soci-
ety of Jesus in 1543. Renowned
as a popular preacher, Canisius
packed churches and was said
to have been so eloquent and
convincing that he attracted
hundreds of Protestants back
to the Catholic faith.
Devoted to the Virgin Mary, he
is credited with adding to the
Hail Mary the sentence “Holy
Mary, Mother of God, pray for
us sinners.” When asked if he
felt overworked, the energetic
Canisius replied with a steward-
ship quote: “If you have too
much to do, with God’s help
you will find time to do it all.”
Canisius died on December 21,
1597 at age 76. Canonized and
declared a Doctor of the Church
in 1925, he is the patron saint of
Germany.
