How do you solve a problem like maize?

• High risk/high yield crop being grown outside natural limits.

• 16 Anaerobic Digestion added over 7,000 acres of maize in Wye b/w 2009-13.

• 75% of maize fields show high or severe levels of soil degradation.

• Major problems with soil and phosphate loss in wet autumns.

The solution

• Chisel ploughing – effective but costly

• Broadcast grass – Mixed results

• Direct drilling works• Partnership between Dwr

Cymru, WUF and Field solutions to deliver and publicise the solution.

• New drill and coulter built• 6 major growers took up offer

in 2016 (132ha)• Drill fully booked in 2017• 2 more drills secured

Pushing the ‘Laggards’

• The Wye catchment partnership and 2015 judicial Review of use of Water protection zones created the environment.

• 2015/16 EA identified risk areas and staff went out on wet days.

• 63 breaches of soil loss rules recorded.

• 2016 Soils workshops.• Farmers responded!• but RPA dysfunctional• 2016/17 used satellite married to risk

maps with threat of works orders.• 13 threats issued 2017• 12 of the farmers contacted WUF

within 24hrs

376ha of high/medium risk land changed to lower risk land
