Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Deforestation: 12 million ha (30 million acres) of moist tropical

forest are cleared every year [1 billion acres (400 million ha.) has been cleared since 1972].

GHG Emissions: Recent research shows deforestation/ forest degradation is responsible for 12-15% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions.

One Approach: To reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) is to monetize the value of standing forest (Forest Carbon Credits) as an alternative to destructive uses of the forest.

Forest Carbon Credits Should be • Environmentally Positive

o Preserving Forestso Sustaining Ecosystemso Conserving Species

• Socio-economically and Culturally Beneficialo Providing Alternative Incomes o Improving Health and Well-beingo Sustaining Traditional Practices

• Financially Soundo Accounting Accurately for Reduced Emissions o Protecting Permanently against Reversalso Promoting Transparency

Societal Outreach

Research Center for Climate Change

University of Indonesia

By 2014: a multi-level outreach program to reach Indonesians at all levels of society, across different scales and in different ways. Particular efforts will be made to include indigenous communities, small holders, other traditional forest users.

Academic Programs• Specialized courses that draw upon combined

expertise found at RCCC-UI, and CEES-CU.• MS degree that meets the requirements of the

UI Administration and MOEC• Shared Expertise UI faculty and other

international experts exchange knowledge to mutually build capacity for climate change mitigation.

Professional Certificate

8-week program for members of Government, Non-profit, and Private Sectors to understand and implement forest conservation projects, including innovative finance mechanisms for Sustainable Forest management such as the Rainforest Standard.

Launch September 2013

Essential Knowledge and Skills• Background on climate change and

drivers of deforestation

• Technical, political, financial, social, legal and environmental issues related to sustainable forestry financing

• Basic scientific survey and monitoring strategies to assess biodiversity, forest cover, and carbon stock
