Plastic Bottle

Recycling Program in

American Samoa

Talofa!

Short for 'Si o ta alofa atu,’ which

means, 'I am happy and delighted

to give you my love’

TEO Deputy Director Christian

Rawson and Senior Engineer

Michael Vehar were impressed

by the quality of the shirts that

Da Ai Technology makes out of

recycled plastic bottles.

Led by TEO director Reupena

Tagaloa, our team visited the

overflowing landfill site by

Fagatele Bay.

It was sad to see so much plastic

waste marring the

beautiful island landscape

instead of being recycled.

When Governor Tulafono met

with our team, he expressed his

deep gratitude for all the work

that Tzu Chi Foundation has done

for American Samoa in the past.

He was delighted to find out that

Tzu Chi does much more than

disaster relief work

all around the world.

The Governor was very

excited to learn what Da Ai

Technology can do with recycled

plastic bottles.

We met with American Samoa’s

largest soft drink distributor, GHC

Reid, to discuss possible recycling

effort partnerships.

CRAG’s Trevor Kaitu’u shared

innovative incentive suggestions

to get the islanders interested

and involved

in new and

exciting

recycling

programs at

local schools.

Our team shared Tzu Chi’s

mission and purpose with

students at American Samoa’s

Community College. The

students were inspired to care

for Mother Earth and to

remember the three R’s:

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse.

Native Tzu Chi volunteer,

Evelyn T. Sao-Stevens, reminded

the college students how

Samoans used to take care

of the land in the old days.

American Samoa Power Authority

(ASPA) presented

their own vision of a

sustainable future.

Andra Samoa,

ASPA’s CEO,

was overjoyed to

wear a beautiful

and comfortable

Da Ai polo shirt

made entirely

out of recycled

plastic bottles.

After our presentation, the team’s first

question was “How do we become

Tzu Chi Volunteers?”

Our team visited LBJ Hospital,

site of past Tzu Chi Medical

Outreach programs on

American Samoa.

We met Dr. Jim Malone, who is

already known as a recycling

fanatic. He packs plastic bottles

in his suitcase to recycle when

he travels to the mainland. He

was very

excited

about

Tzu Chi.

Local Tzu Chi Volunteers

helped prepare for the main event

at Lee Auditorium

Ready for the crowd

A full house of over 150 residents

came to our community gathering to

hear about recycling on the island.

The event was a

complete success!

1. Identify Tzu Chi local POC

2. Starting the Grassroots Movement

3. Encourage volunteer concept

4. Establishing the local recycling

centers

5. Display Products at various site

6. Plan to make lavalava with local

plastic bottles at Da Ai Technology

one plastic bottle at a time…
