CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 NEED AND RELEVANCE OF THE STUDY
Pharmaceutical companies do play a very important role in the healthcare area of the
nation. The implementation of product patent in the year 2007 has lead to stiff
competition in the global market. In the era of globalization Pharmaceutical companies
will have to strengthen their R&D activity. To survive the stiff competition there is a
need for effective strategic planning to meet the challenges posed by the product patent
era. On the positive side in the present context with the available resources like
manpower, skill and expertise the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry will in future be a
major player in the global Market share. Although, the industry has the potential to
become a major international player, it will have to adopt new techniques, innovation and
strong and effective strategic planning.
Currently the main activities of Indian Pharmaceutical industry are broadly restricted to
producing (i) bulk drugs and (ii) formulations with very few companies. With the entry of
the Multinational companies the Indian markets have mostly restricted themselves to
formulation segment till date. The domestic Pharmaceutical industry (MNC’s and
Domestic) meets about 90% of the country’s bulk drug requirement. During the last few
years India lot of efforts have been put in this sector. This has necessitated revamping of
Human Resource Practices in the existing Pharmaceutical industry.
Watson Wyatt’s Human Capital Index Study found that superior HR practices are
leading indicators of increased shareholder value. Thus, real investment in today’s
knowledge society is in people, besides plants and machinery. After all it is the people
who make the organization work. A satisfied employee is an happy employee.
Having gone through various studies, it is evident that HR practices have strong bearing
upon the workforce in the Pharmaceutical industry. To date, review of literature shows
that HRM researchers have been laying more emphasis on human capital management
practices, focusing on the extent to which a set of practice is used across the firm. The
Research Methodology
96
proposed study is based upon the resource based view of the firm which suggests that
human resources are valuable as they enable a firm to plan strategies that will help in
improving efficiency and productivity, exploit market opportunities and develop the
origination.
In the 21st century to be successful is necessary to adopt innovative methods, redefining
their strategic planning, creating new markets, face challenges and better and effective
human resource management practices. All this can only be possible through Therefore, it
becomes very important here to do a study on HR Practices and how it affects the
employees and the organization.

3.6 SOURCES OF DATA
To present a comprehensive analysis of PHARMACEUTICAL industry under the study
both primary and secondary data has been collected. The challenging task of Collection
of primary data was done by getting the questionnaires filled by the appropriate
Research Methodology
103
employees. These were administered and collected personally.
3.6.1 PRIMARY SOURCES
Primary Data was collected through questionnaires from employees at managerial level
for studying the impact of appropriateness of prevalent HR Practices as perceived by
managerial employees on Job Satisfaction and Organisational Commitment in the Six
Pharmaceutical units (Refer appendix: 2)
3.6.2 SECONDARY SOURCES
The existing literature was studied deeply to know and understand the existing gaps in the
literature. Information from Government of India, Rajasthan has also been gathered as
per requirement. Other sources of study like-Journals, Books, Magazines, reports of the
units understudy, Internet and Newspapers were also studied to know the prevailing HR
practices and its effect on employees’ in terms of Job satisfaction and organizational
commitment.
3.7 DATA COLLECTION TOOLS
The Questionnaire was prepared for the managerial employees of the Pharmaceutical
units understudy for studying the appropriateness of HR practices. The Questionnaire
started with information relating demographic profile of the respondents i.e. Age,
Qualification, Gender, Marital Status, Income Group, Professional Experience, Level of
Management, etc. followed by three parts i.e. Part-I is related to thirteen HR Practices
prevalent in the Pharmaceutical industry. Part-II comprises of a standardized
questionnaire relating to Job Satisfaction and Part –III carried the standardized questions
to measure the level of Organisational Commitment among the managerial employees in
the Pharmaceutical units under study. For the purpose of measuring the appropriateness
of prevalent HR Practices, a questionnaire was developed by the researcher comprising of
thirteen HR Practices. The thirteen variables relating to Human Resource Practices
mentioned in the questionnaire have been categorized into five factors. (As per appendix:
3)

Sr. Factors HR Practices
1. Procurement and Development 1-5
2 Employee Benefits 6-9
3. Employee Schemes 10-11
4. Promotions and Transfers 12
5. Exit Policy 13
In general, a three point Likert scale was used in the Part-I of the Questionnaire. The 3-
point scale ranged from:
3 - Appropriate (A)
2 - Not Sure (NS)
1 - Inappropriate (IA)
This Job Satisfaction questionnaire-cum-scale contains 10 statements regarding the
different factors which can affect the satisfaction level of a person. These factors are:
Promotions, Favoritism, General Supervision, supervisor, skills required, job security,
salary, Welfare Facilities, Advancement in the Job. The representation of different
components according to statement number is given below (Refer appendix: 3)

2. Working Conditions 3,4
3. Quality of Work Life 8
4. Supervisory Style 5
5. Skill Enhancement 6,7
The items were scored on a three-point Likert scale according to the following response
categories:
Research Methodology
105
3 - Agree (A)
2 - Undecided (U)
1 - Disagree (DA)
Higher score indicates greater Job Satisfaction.
The scale used for the purpose of measuring the responses of the managerial employees
for Organisational Commitment was the one developed by Meyer and Allen in 1997. The
scale had three measures named as Affective Commitment, Normative Commitment and
Continuance Commitment.
The scale had 10 items. The representation of different components according to the
statement number is given below (Refer appendix: 3)
Table: 3.4 Measures of Organisational Commitment
Sr. Measures Statement Number
1. Affective Commitment 1 to 4
2. Normative Commitment 5 to 7
3. Continuance Commitment 8 to 10
The items were scored on a three-point Likert scale according to the following response
categories:
3 - Agree (A)
2 - Undecided (U)
1 - Disagree (DA)
Allen and Meyer, while discussing the validity of the Organisational Commitment
questionnaire, found the three-component model i.e. Affective, Normative and
Continuance Commitment each comprising a separate dimension of commitment.
3.7.1 RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY ANALYSIS
Reliability can be defined to the extent to which a variable is consistent in what it is
intended to measure. Several measures of reliability can ascertain the reliability of the
measuring instrument. In the present research, the reliability of the HR Practices, Job
Research Methodology
106
Satisfaction, Organisational Commitment questionnaire scale was determined by using
Cronbach’s Coefficient alpha as shown in the table: 3.5
Table: 3.5 Reliability Coefficients
HR PRACTICES JOB
SATISFACTION
ORGANISATIONAL
COMMITMENT
Number of items 5 5 3
Cronbach’s Alpha (∝) 0.8350 0.8163 0.8222
* Values of 0.60 and above testify strong reliability of the scale.
The reliability coefficient indicated that the scale for measuring HR Practices is quite
reliable as the alpha value is 0.8350. For the purpose of measuring Job Satisfaction and
Organizational Commitment the reliability coefficients are 0.8163 and 0.8222 (As per
appendix: 4) An alpha value of 0.60 and 0.70 or above is considered to be the criterion
for demonstrating internal consistency of new scales and established scales respectively.
As the value exceeded the minimum requirement, it is thereby demonstrated that all the
factors of HR Practices, Job Satisfaction and Organisational Commitment are internally
consistent.
‘Validity’ represents the extent to which a measure correctly represents the concept of
study. To test the Content Validity of the HR Practices Questionnaire developed by the
researcher, an extensive interaction with the eminent experts and practitioners was
undertaken. As standardized questionnaires were used for the purpose of collecting data
relating to Job Satisfaction and Organisational Commitment, Validity testing has already
been performed by the respective authors, Dubey, Maini and Uppal for Job Satisfaction
and Allen and Meyer (1997) for Organisational Commitment.
3.7.2 PILOT SURVEY
A pilot survey is short and preliminary piece of survey conducted before a
complete survey to test the effectiveness of the research methodology. This should be

completed before the final survey commences. The main objective of the study is to
identify the impact of appropriateness of HR Practices on Job Satisfaction and
Organisational Commitment. The pilot survey identifies and sorts out any difficulty
during the survey. A pilot survey of 20 respondents was conducted. The responses were
carefully reviewed and subsequent changes were made in the questionnaire.
3.8 ANALYSIS OF DATA
To arrive at pertinent analysis, the collected data was put to planned statistical analysis
using SPSS package. The tools, which were employed to test, the drafted hypothesis for
analysis included; Factor Analysis, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Multiple
Comparison, Co-relation and Regression Analysis. After scoring the questionnaire the
data was tabulated for each variable being studied separately for each Pharmaceutical
units. The computation of the data was done in order to do the following statistical
analysis through SPSS package: 1) Descriptive Analysis 2) Inferential Analysis 3)
Correlational Analysis 4) Multiple Regression Analysis
3.8.1 Descriptive Analysis
It was basically done to describe the basic features of the data in a study, with an
objective of analyzing the mean scores and the standard deviation scores. Together with
simple graphic analysis like Bar graphs, descriptive statistics form the basis of virtually
every quantitative analysis of data for Pharmaceutical units under study.
3.8.2 Inferential Analysis
The inferential statistics included the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple
Comparison to determine whether significant differences existed between the prevalent
HR practices, Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment on the various
dimensions.
Research Methodology
108
3.8.3 Correlation Analysis
In order to understand the relationship among various variables taken for Job Satisfaction
and HR Practices, Organisational Commitment and HR Practices, the Pearson’s
Correlation was computed.
3.8.4 Multiple Regression Analysis
The stepwise multiple regression analysis was done to determine the relative contribution
of the independent variables of HR Practices (i.e. Procurement and Development,
Employee Benefits, Employee Schemes, Promotions and Transfers and Exit Policy) on
the dependent variables like Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment. (Bock,
1975)
3.9 COMPANY PROFILE OF PHARMACEUTICAL UNITS UNDERSTUDY
The PHARMACEUTICAL sector has received a lot of attention recently due to the
opportunities opening up recently. This period is believed to be one of intense and
aggressive competition, which will eventually lead to a consolidation of the players in the
industry.
The latest budget measures are bound to give a boost to the Pharmaceutical industry
forward. This will enhance their profitability and make them more competitive.
In order to sustain their relative position in the global market, units in the Pharmaceutical
industry will require motivated and proactive teams in place, at every level. This calls for
effective employee management as well, which can be done through a periodic
evaluation, of effective HR practices for the employees, especially at managerial levels.
Taking into consideration, the above competitive scenario, few units were selected that
have initiated these HR practices, proactively for facing these challenges of the future.
A brief overview comprising of history, capacity of the units, their vision, mission,
objectives and hr practices along with the organization products is presented here for all
the six Pharmaceutical units understudy. These units are:

BIO-CHEMIC/ BIO-
COMBINATIONS
In human body, there are certain essential salts (inorganic) that are responsible for
growth, development and repair of tissue cells. These tissue cells constitute organs.
Deficiency of any of these salts can cause disorder and disease in a particular organ. As
early as 1873, Dr.W.H.Schuessler, M.D., an eminent German homoeopathic physician,
Research Methodology
157
found 12 essential inorganic salts which are present in tissue cells of human body, and
discovered that the "presence of these 12 salts in the blood and tissues are sufficient to
cure diseases caused by their deficiency." These essential salts are called bio-chemic
salts, and the system of therapy researched and established by Dr.W.H.Schuessler is
known as bio-chemic therapy. This therapy is an offshoot of homoeopathy as the twelve
salts are potentised and used as homoeopathic drugs.
When an imbalance or deficiency of a particular bio-chemic salt is compensated as
medicine, it not only alleviates the symptoms and treats the disease caused by the
deficiency, but also checks the imbalance of that particular salt. This therapy developed
in 19th century, still holds good as millions of patients all over the world are treated by
this proven therapy.
SBL, the leading homoeopathic company in India, manufacturing the entire range of bio-
chemic salts through the latest technology, using imported lactose, in a state-of-the-art
manufacturing unit, produces unmatched quality of bio-chemic tablets at par with
international standards.
Complete range of bio-chemics (in 3X to 200X potencies) and bio-combinations is
available in 25gm and 450gm packs Manufacturing of the tablets i.e. trituration, bio-
