ENGINEER SESSIONSCo-presented by: Society of Plastics Engineers, Mold Making and Mold Design Division
Examine the technologies and best practices that are necessary for mold buyers and mold builders to make critical decisions when it comes to de-risking the product launch and making that quoted cycle time.
Moderator:Glenn Starkey, Mold Making and Mold Design Division Chair, Society of Plastics Engineers
8:15 AM - 9:00 AM:Reactive and Proactive Simulation Where does simulation fit in and where doesn’t it? What scenarios fit for one approach vs. another? Both reactive and proactive approaches will be covered, including discussion about how moldmakers get paid for this service and how to avoid common “enemies” that cause unscheduled downtime.
Panelists:CAE Services - Tim Lankisch, Director of Engineering Moldex3D - John Snawerdt, Application EngineerExtreme Tool & Engineering - Eldon Leidich, Mold Design / Simulation Engineer
9:00 AM - 9:45 AM:The Dollars and Sense of Additive Manufacturing and Conformal Cooling Meeting customer needs today requires going beyond just building a mold; it means recommending techniques for cycle reduction, too. Panelists will share where it makes dollars and sense to apply alternative manufacturing and cooling approaches, and where it does not. Attendees will learn the importance of doing more engineering than traditionally required so their customers can achieve the increase in productivity they desire, and so the mold builder can secure future business.
Panelists:Robert Beard & Associates - Bob Beard, PresidentAutodesk - Jay Shoemaker, Principle Learning Experience DesignerLinear Mold & Engineering - Lou Young, Director, New Business Development, Tooling and Manufacturing
10:00 AM - 10:45 AM:Demystifying Venting Options: What Approach Matches What Problem? Many part quality issues—weld lines, flow lines, sinks, bubbles, burning, dimensional stability, etc.—can be traced to inadequate mold venting, which is still considered a “black art” at times. Panelists will review areas to consider when assessing venting effectiveness and address strategies for optimal venting. They will begin with an overview of several best practices and then do a closer examination of the top two. Attendees will learn how to eliminate or
decrease adjustments to the tool during validation, yielding better part quality at an improved cycle time.
Panelists:Progressive Components - Ken Rumore, Senior Design EngineerInternational Mold Steel - Paul Britton, National Sales Manager, Mold Products Div.DME - Bob Salhaney, Product Engineer
10:45 AM - 11:30 AM:When Things Go Wrong: Firefighters Share Experiences from the FieldOEMs want to know what their suppliers are doing to avoid being plagued by short- and long-term tooling problems, and these “tales from the front lines” can guide specifications to prevent issues from arising.
Panelists:SIGMA Plastic Services, Inc. - Matt Proske, Vice PresidentRJG - Rod Groleau, OwnerMGS MFG Group - Kevin Klotz, Project Engineer, Quality & Simulation ServicesExtreme Tool Engineering - Mike Zacharias, President

BUILD SESSIONSSponsored by: Makino
Examine challenges and strategies for building your business not just molds, driving the next generation of skilled workers, implementing technology and making the most of industry resources.
Moderator: Vic Baez, Plastics Technology Manager, Rockwell Automation
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM:Driving the Next Generation Skilled WorkforceWhat value are we putting on manufacturing instruction? How has manufacturing education changed recently? How are companies successfully attracting new employees? Once recruited, how do we train them to be the next drivers of success for our companies? Panelists will share strategies for recruiting, training and advancing skills, as well as demonstrate the return you can experience by investing in your workforce.
Panelists:Cardinal Manufacturing/Eleva-Strum Central High School - Craig Cegielski, InstructorWaukesha County Technical College (WCTC) - Robert Novak, Associate Dean, School of Applied TechnologiesWestminster Tool Inc. - Ray Coombs, President
Expert Technical Training - Ryan Pohl, President
2:15 PM - 3:15 PM:Implementing Technology: The Pain and the GainBefore taking a giant leap with a new technology, it’s wise to first do an ROI on capital equipment expenditures. Shop panelists will provide a best practices roadmap for gauging a company’s financial and operational readiness for implementing automation and other machining, inspection, and design technologies, and show attendees how to avoid common pitfalls.
Panelists:Cavalier Tool - Brian Bendig, PresidentParagon D&E - Andrew Samrick, Chief Operating OfficerJanler Corp. - Charles Klingler, Vice PresidentMGS MFG Group - Jeff Kolbow, Chief Operating Officer
3:15 PM - 4:00 PM:Advancing Your Company: Where Trade Associations Fit InChances are you belong to at least one trade association, but are you taking advantage of programs offered that could benefit your company beyond networking dinners and golf outings? Hear from active members how trade associations can help companies build better workforces; develop a marketing plan, prepare for the coming storms and help fight to change the storms’ direction; and even how to build profits via association programs and events. Attendees will learn how to access and use the programs and resources that associations offer to help build a stronger company.

Develop the skills and systems necessary to understand how much unscheduled mold stops are costing your company and to identify and target these and other high cost mold operating issues that take large bites out of the profit margin, including addressing motivation and skill levels of craftsmen.
Moderator: Steve Johnson, Operations Manager, ToolingDocs
8:15 AM - 9:15 AM: Why Does Firefighting Trump Systemized Maintenance?Panelists will address what keeps firefighting alive in the shop environment and what it costs in time and money. Strategies will be shared for how to move away from firefighting by identifying the level of one’s firefighting culture first, and then using metrics to set real, measurable targets for improvement. Reports on part and mold defects and related corrective actions will also be examined. Attendees will be provided a calculator to estimate their own metrics and discover the costs of their unscheduled downtime.
Panelists:ToolingDocs - Randy Winton, Global Assessment & Training Manager and Steve Johnson, Operations Manager Scholle Packaging - Dan Knapik, Tooling ManagerSenninger - Eugene Hassam, Mold Maintenance Supervisor
9:30 AM - 10:30 AM:Building a Well-Designed, Efficient Toolroom Learn how shop design influences the level of craftsmanship, efficiency, technical skills and safety, as well as the morale exhibited within the facility. Panelists will discuss the tools necessary to build a well-designed toolroom and will share success stories of how moving to a more organized, cleaner, better equipped and thought out shop environment has influenced the operations and profitability of their teams. It’s not always about spending a lot of money; it’s about forethought, good planning and understanding the short and long-term needs and goals of your tool room.
Panelists:ToolingDocs - Steve Johnson, Operations ManagerAutomation Plastics - Jerome Smith, Engineering Manager
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM:Cultivating Craftsmen Seventy percent of the typical workforce is not reaching its potential, and of that 70 percent, 52 percent are disengaged and 18 percent are actively disruptive. We will discuss a Gallup report providing insight to help analyze that data. Panelists will examine what it takes to motivate repair technicians to achieve a higher skill level; factors that influence a technician’s desire to succeed in a hands-on trade; the responsibility for and measurement of benchwork accomplishments; and, methods for setting targets and goals in a competitive toolroom maintenance environment. Mold repair panelists will also share what works and what doesn’t.
